TERMINATED,
COMPENSATED, VINDICATED!
This is what happened to psychologist
and race realist Chris
Brand at Edinburgh University (Looneyversity).
Academics today are cowed by political correctness (PeeCee).
They won't discuss inheritance if doing so brings them up against multicultural
or feminist (feminazie) dogma.
They won't read THE g FACTOR. They
won't even defend free speech.
Yet still, as Edinburgh's Evening News has put it, "the Brand plays
on"
– with special thanks since 2000 to the Woodhill Foundation (USA) and its
realistic humanism!

STACEY, Spectator, 23 viii 2003.
Why I Am Not a Muslim is a sometimes brilliant, sometimes maddeningly
repetitive broadside. In it, ‘Ibn Warraq’ [a pseudonym to protect the apostate]
takes pains to distinguish religious Islam from ``Islamic civilization,''
which, he says, ``often reached magnificent heights despite [the Koran and the
theologians] and not because of them.'' (While few fundamentalists would admit
as much, freethinkers have been signal figures of Islamic civilization.
Consider the well-known 11th-century Syrian-born poet Abu al-Ala al-Maarri, who
wrote: ``The earth has people of two kinds:/The ones who think have no
religion,/the others do and have no minds.'')
Warraq's book cuts against
the ecumenical, feel-good vision of Islam as a ``religion of peace'' found
everywhere from President Bush's speeches to popular books such as Karen
Armstrong's ``Islam: A Short History.'' Indeed, anyone who's read Armstrong's
book may think that she and Warraq are discussing two entirely different belief
systems. Armstrong, for example, says that it's impossible to judge the prophet
Muhammad's assassinations of his political enemies and wholesale slaughter of a
Jewish tribe against our present-day mores. But if we cannot condemn his faults
according to contemporary standards, Warraq argues, then neither can we hold
him up as the wise and tolerant lawgiver whom contemporary moderates praise.
Warraq also contends that
Islam's apologists are so eager to perpetuate the ``myth'' of a tolerant Islam
that accorded liberty to its non-Muslim subjects that they concentrate almost
exclusively on the relatively decent treatment of Christians and Jews, the
so-called fellow People of the Book, while ignoring the harsher fate of Arab
pagans, Zoroastrians, Hindus, and Buddhists. ``Are they not human?'' he asks.
While some evangelical Christians
have embraced his work, Warraq has been critical of that faith as well. Still,
Warraq says he much prefers Christianity's philosophy, which ``teaches God's
love, a far cry from Islam's wrathful image of God.'' In Why I Am Not a
Muslim, he adds that while ``most Christians'' have moved away from a
``literal interpretation of the Bible,'' Muslims have not. ``All Muslims–not
just the group we have called fundamentalists–believe that the Koran is
literally the word of God,'' delivered directly, word for word, to his prophet
Muhammad, he says.

A Re-assessment
Christopher
Brand is the author of The g Factor. This 1996 book on
general intelligence (g)* was favourably reviewed in the top science
magazine Nature on 5 May, 1996; but by that time the book had already
been withdrawn from UK bookshops by its publisher. Wiley & Sons
(Chichester, UK) had been told by its head office in New York that Brand's
politically incorrect claims about race differences were "repellent."
Wiley's decision to withdraw the book gave the green light for 'anti-racists'
in Scotland to demand that Brand endure an inquisition for his 'scientific
racism' which would hopefully end in his being publicly humiliated and
banned from teaching.
* See e.g. Scientific
American's introduction to the g factor (the main
factor in IQ-type tests).
Readily
affirming hereditarian views on race, IQ, and sex differences, but repeatedly
asking that his book be re-published and actually read by his critics, Brand
was eventually fired by Edinburgh University in August 1997. His dismissal
followed twenty-six years of unblemished academic service and one year of him
being publicly denounced by his own University Principal as
"obnoxious." Though he was cleared by senior Edinburgh academics of a
raft of spurious charges -- of "unfairness" as a teacher and
examiner, of lack of repute as a researcher, and of having done
"damage" to the University -- a mere one page of e-mail
which he had copied to the Edinburgh University Chaplain was judged to have
been a sackable "disgrace."
The e-mail item had been just one page of The g Factor
NewsLetter which was published every few days during 1996 to defend Brand's
book and views and to denounce illiberalism of all kinds – as well as the
modern censorship which Brand was himself experiencing. NewsLetters were
sent regularly to the Chaplain, at that dominie's request, to help him 'counsel
students upset by racism'; but in fact the Chaplain, the Rev. Iain Whyte,
attended protest rallies mounted by the 'Anti-Nazi League.' The 16 October 1996
NewsLetter issue included a suggestion of clemency for an American Nobel
Prize-winner facing 30 years in jail for non-violent and apparently
inconsequential paedophilic indecency with a teenage boy, one of some 50
children he had legally and very helpfully adopted (mainly from Papua New
Guinea). The extract was taken to Scotland's tabloid press three weeks later.
(This gift to the tabloid occurred just when Oxford University Press had been
persuaded to show interest in re-publishing The g Factor and the
University Principal had written to the Scottish press to reposition himself,
now saying he had no criticism of The g Factor for he had never read
it.) A media firestorm promptly followed, leading to the University setting up
a Tribunal and – after three months of evidence and deliberations – to Brand
being dismissed.
--
Such was the
revenge of the politically correct on race-realist Brand and The g Factor. The 'academic publisher' and the
university principal [Sir Stewart Sutherland] who denounced Brand without ever
reading his book effectively threw him to the mob which proved classically
insatiable -- especially since only a half dozen academics ever came forward to
defend even Brand's right to free speech. Even this display of ‘antiracism’ was
not sufficient for history professor Tony
Kushner, director of a Jewish history centre at Southampton University, who
publicly urged more “punishment” of Brand. However, in a 1999 moral
victory, Brand extracted £12,000 from Edinburgh University, equal to the
maximum sum that could in those days be won from courts in the United Kingdom
for unfair dismissal (Times [London] 29 Oct. '99, p. 2). Edinburgh
University actually said it was paying out "to prevent the airing of
Brand's opinions and views at public expense" (Times Higher 5 Nov.
'99, p. 2) -- showing the modern disdain preferred by PeeCee to any open
contest of ideas.
Brand has long
been known to readers of Nature, Times Higher, Behaviour
Research & Therapy, Personality & Individual Differences and
European Journal of Personality. He is a Fellow of the Galton Institute
and a supporter of the 'London School'
of psychology – backing the main ideas of the famous British psychologists Sir
Francis Galton, Charles Spearman, Sir Cyril Burt and Hans Eysenck. Researches
by Brand and his students have indicated that g is not primarily
'knowledge.' Rather, g involves a fast speed of intake for even the
simplest information about the world. (In trade terms, IQ correlates around
-.50 with the exposure time [or 'inspection time'] needed for tachistoscopic
recognition.)
Brand continues
to hope that some publisher will daringly show an interest in his proposed
biography of William McDougall FRS, the instinct psychologist who was professor
of psychology at Harvard from 1920 to 1926 but was later ignored because he had
opposed behaviourism, egalitarianism and social environmentalism. Wiley DePublisher insists on retaining
copyright on The g Factor (1996) unless and
until Brand promises to stop criticizing Abominable Wiley's nauseating conduct,
but a revised (2001) version is available free online at http://www.douance.org/qi/brandtgf.htm.
For the kind of wilfully ignorant criticism mounted by the UK
'Anti-Nazi League', see e.g. http://platon.ee.duth.gr/data/maillist-archives/cyberurbanity/1997/msg00138.html:
this far-left group claimed "the work was withdrawn partly through
political pressure, but also because of unsubstantiated claims contained within
it which masqueraded as 'science', and the quality of the research upon which
it was based." According to the neo-Stalinist magazine Challenge
(24 Sep. 1997, http://www.plp.org/cd97/cd924.html
)"Brand is part of an international academic network that includes Arthur
Jensen, Charles Murray and Dinesh D’Souza in the U.S., J. Philippe Rushton in Canada,
and Richard Lynn and H. J. Eysenck in the U.K. These reborn Nazis get big bucks
from the Nazi Pioneer Fund and from New Money foundations such as the Bradley
Foundation." (In fact, Brand – a psychology lecturer and personality
theorist -- never requested or received any such funding.) For modern hysteria
in the West about 'scientific racism', and how Brand came to break the taboo,
go to http://ds.dial.pipex.com/hhe/ind97.htm.
There, what happened to Brand is denounced as "a new, subtle form of censorship, where
nobody desires to be called a "censor", but under which inconvenient
people will simply not get their books published at all."

PRESS RELEASE ON
BRAND'S DISMISSAL
--
In the seven years since his publisher let him down and Edinburgh
University moved to fire him, psychologist Brand has been academically
vindicated. There is fresh and strong support for all the main
propositions which Brand championed.
ABSTRACT of Brand, Constales & Kane
(2003),
' Why ignore the g factor? --
Historical considerations.'
In Helmuth Nyborg (ed.), The
Scientific Study of General Intelligence: A Tribute to Arthur R. Jensen.
Oxford : Elsevier Science/Pergamon
Today's neglect of general intelligence (g) and IQ by
psychologists, educationists and the media is the West's version of Lysenkoism.
By 2000, denial of g became
effectively the official science policy of the USA as Stephen Jay Gould, the
author of The Mismeasure of Man -- and thus Arthur Jensen's main rival
-- was elected President of the American Association for the Advancement of
Science. Rooted in an egalitarian ideology that the West had managed to expel
from the field of economic policy in the Reagan/Thatcher years, denial of g has typically been supported by
wilful ignorance, wishful thinking and downright censoriousness.
Those who deplore g and its links
to heredity, achievement and race often rehearse the
multifactorial/componential ambitions of the nineteenth–century phrenologists
that eventually appealed to American psychologists in the 1930's and
subsequently. Alternatively, g-denial may deploy both ancient and modern
arguments that nothing can be 'measured' in psychology. These two contradictory
positions of IQ's more scholarly detractors are especially considered in this
chapter, as is the less-often-remarked problem for the London School that so
few Christian-era philosophers and psychologists -- prior to Herbert Spencer
and Sir Francis Galton -- made
much room in their systems for g.
Despite
considerable tacit acceptance of Plato's stress on the centrality of reason in
human psychology, Plato's elitism and eugenicism are feared for their
supposedly authoritarian implications; thus his acknowledgment that people have
different general mental potential is set aside. However, a hypothesis is
advanced here, and supported empirically, which attributes neglect of g by intellectuals partly to their
limited experience of real life – across the full IQ range. Data from 6,539
representative American subjects are searched to form groups having mean IQs
115 and 85 respectively, and it is found that the g factor accounts for
almost twice as much mental ability variance among subjects in the
lower-IQ group, in line with the account of intelligence given in Chapter 2 of The
g Factor (Wiley DePublisher, 1996). Finally, it is suggested that Platonic
realism actually enjoys distinguished support in modern philosophy and provides
a basis for a new liberalism.

The g Factor: General Intelligence and Its
Implications
New Scientist [London] wrote in an editorial (May, 1996): "It
is….a great pity that the book will not now be speedily published, for it is
probably the best argued treatise from the general intelligence camp. For the
many that will disagree violently with every step of its argument, this is the
book to stimulate a true scientific debate."
The up-market
American-Jewish magazine Commentary referred to "[t]his
provocative but worthy book" (CASSE, Daniel, 'IQ since The Bell
Curve', August 1998, v106, n2, p33(7)).

Excellent
overview of debate
Reviewer: A
reader from Houston, Texas; February 28, 1999
This is simply an
excellent book. It is well written, the general interest is high, and the prose
sparkles like champagne. As a book on the subject of psychometrics, it is
superb writing, and Brand manages to capture the crux of the debate in clear,
crisp informative style. An interesting point of the book is his tackling of
the more difficult issues of intelligence, like the types of heritablility, the
evidence marshalled indicating differences in group IQ, and discussions of the
evidence given regarding the arguments against IQ as it is now being studied.
This book is a different format than The Bell Curve, as it uses less
correlative data for social impact of IQ, but it hits on the overall issues in
much more depth than The Bell Curve gave, and it is not a policy
recommendation book. Overall, a very good book. Buy it to anger the folks
who would see it panned and because of its merits.
The website of the
French-Tunisian evolutionary psychologist Philippe Gouillou, http://www.douance.org,
provides a summary of The g
Factor and a very favourable review
(first published October 2000). Gouillou writes about the author:
A book published in Germany
in 2000 described and deplored the de-publication of The g Factor (Volkmar
Weiss, Die IQ-Falle).
The Pittsburgh physicist and
parapsychologist, Emeritus Professor Bob McConnell, has recounted
(2000, Joyride to Infinity, Washington:Scott-Townsend) the
"emotional firestorm" which resulted when Brand's views opposing
conventional multidimensionalism, interactionism, constructivism and
psychological nihilism were presented to a Berlin (Dahlem) conference on twins
in 1992. Of The g Factor, McConnell writes:
"Your reviewer has
examined the book carefully. It is a scholarly work. He found nothing in the
book that should give offense to an educated person regardless of race.
…[Brand] treats his adversaries with respect – even those whom, in his
subsequently-published Internet McDougall Newsletter, he has humorously
belittled. …Among the major players in today's psychometric scene, Brand is
possible the strongest, and certainly the most vocal supporter of Jensen's point
of view. Brand's experimental work on Inspection Time as a function of
intelligence is fundamental and highly regarded. …Brand gives broader coverage
than Jensen to several subjects, including the slight relation of Piagetian
theory to the g factor, "tracking" (or, as the British call
it, "streaming") in the classroom, and the politics behind the Flynn
effect. Brand places greater emphasis on subtests and non-g-related
factors than does Jensen. ….Implicit throughout Brand's book is an indictment
of the psychological profession for its trivialization of psychology by both
the neo-behaviorists and the cognitive theorists. ….[After depublication, the McDougall
Newsletter] became the intellectual's tabloid, emphasizing the
concupiscence, cupidity and stupidity rampant among the politically powerful
and the intellectually pretentious. ….[Brand] is a man of vast erudition and
obviously has good sources, ranging from Science to intimate associates
of people in high places."
In 2000, the President of
the e-mail group on Human Biodiversity, Steve Sailer, offered

The McDougall NewsLetters for Spring, 1998 contain full details of Edinburgh University's charges against Chris Brand, the latter's defence, the report of the Edinburgh LUniversity Tribunal, and Brand's Appeal before an internally appointed Scottish High Court judge (Mr T. Gordon Coutts QC). Subsequently, faced with legal action, the University paid Brand £UK12,000 -- the maximum he could have been awarded by a British court for unfair dismissal. In 1999, he offered an essay prize of £1,000 to encourage students to read his censored book, THE g FACTOR. Meanwhile the LUniversity stumbles from crisis to crisis, as summarized in the following flyer – prepared in 1999 for distribution to all academics and students at E.LU., and occasionally updated.
TAKE A COURSE at the
Looneyversity of Edinburgh!
(It needs your custom now
it's not in the Premier League.)
Learn how Edinburgh
LUniversity -- among the UK's top
six universities -- came only 11th in the overall national assessment of universities by the Sunday
Times (19 Sep. '99), behind the Universities of Warwick and Nottingham. In
other rankings of its teaching and management quality, the Looneyversity has
fallen to 39th=, putting it with the University of
Aberystwyth (Daily Telegraph 19 Aug. '99, A-Level Supplement). In
research funding, E.LU. showed only a 1% rise in funding from 1997 to
1999, whereas Cambridge University enjoyed a 20% increase (Daily Mail 20
Nov. '99). The LUniversity has twice as many students dropping out as do
similarly elite universities which admit few working class kids (Times 3
xii '99).
Learn how
117 E.LU. students were punished for cheating (Scotsman 13 Aug.
'99, p. 1) -- an event now known world-wide as the biggest British exam fraud
ever discovered. Learn how outraged students are taking the LUniversity to
court over the accusation and alleging gross incompetence (Classic
FM Radio, 24 Aug. '99, 11:00); and how the 117 smeared students have set up
a website where they hotly contest the charges (BBC Radio Scotland 24
Aug. '99, 22:00).*
Read how
a student submitted a hoax essay and was awarded a prized mark (2:1) by
E.LU. staff (Times 14 x '99, Guardian 14 x '99). See how
Britain's top 200 'blue chip' employers are giving up on the
LUniversity's graduates (Times 16 Aug. '99). Learn how E.LU. inflated
its own success for the Government's Dearing Commission. Learn how top staff
styled themselves with improper qualifications. Hear how the
Looneyversity sacked Chris Brand, a psychology lecturer for 26 years who
mentioned non-Politically Correct facts about race, sex and IQ; yet, wilfully
illiterate, E.LU.'s PR department publicly celebrates one-time anatomy
professor Robert Knox who was actually Britain's top nineteenth-century
scientific racist! Learn how the university paid out
£12,000 -- the maximum that could have been
awarded by a UK court to Chris Brand for his unfair dismissal (Times 29
Nov. '99, p. 2; Evening News [Edinburgh] 12 Nov. '99). (Why cough up? To
avoid public discussion of Brand's views, said the LUniversity!)
This is
the university that hangs on to a £1million bequest from socialist Arthur
Koestler (famed author of Darkness at Noon) but won't honour
Koestler's name when feminazies and their neosocialist co-religionists
allege 'serial rapism' against Koestler (an accusation emphatically rejected in
Times Literary Supplement 23 Apr. '99).
Hear how
E.LU. today smears one of its own graduates – a top Brand supporter --
as having "harassed" a top E.LU. bureaucrat to death!
Hear how
students want the Chancellor, Prince Philip, sacked for 'racism' (Student
24 xi '99); and how the Prince fails to investigate complaints put to
him about the LUniversity, even letting his Private Secretary deny that the
Prince is the Chairman of its General Council (McDougall NewsLetter 5
Oct. '99). Hear how an E.LU. honours graduate has been jailed for 19 years
in Australia for setting fire to his girlfriend (Times 24 Dec. '99).
Learn how E.LU. sent unsuspecting Jewish students to find accommodation with a Holocaust
practitioner (Independent 20 Jan. '00; Scotsman 22 Jan. '00).
Find why top Scots sociologist Tom Nairn denounced the LUniversity as "mismanaged…by
bean counters" (Sunday Times 23 Jan. '00). Hear why three
female students at E.LU. leaped to their deaths within fourteen months (Daily
Telegraph 3 Feb. '00).
Just ask
at Old College, South Bridge, Edinburgh for Principal Stewart Sutherland to
explain it all! He should be capable: unlike his LUniversity, his annual salary
is well up in the Premier League -- being, at £149,000, the second-highest
for university Vice-Chancellors in the United Kingdom (Times Higher 27
Jan. '00), and called "obscene" by the Association of University
Teachers (Student 2 Feb. '00).
Unfortunately, Sutherland's efforts have failed to impress Prince
William who has rejected studying Fine Art at E.LU. and will instead pursue
a four-years Honours course at the rival University of St Andrews (Daily
Express 16 Aug. '00; Classic FM Radio 17 Aug. '00, 11:00). According
to the Sunday Times (17 Sep. '00), Edinburgh has been overtaken by St Andrews University in the academic league table which that
newspaper draws up annually. When Prince William rejected Edinburgh in favour
of St Andrews in August, Edinburgh's many leftist academics said 'Good riddance
to bad rubbish.' They will not be at all so sanguine about slipping out of the
UK's top ten universities in overall quality ratings (most of them from
government sources) – not least because they know on the inside that they live
under a censorious régime which forbids them to discuss the Brand affair
in common rooms or e-mail.
Losing
£3million annually, so facing a real possibility of bankruptcy over the next
few years, Principal Dame Stewart Sutherland has announced he will be needing
a £40million loan for 'restructuring' and that even then there may be
course closures, staff redundancies and sales of buildings (Student 25
Oct. '00, 'Edinburgh Uni In Cash Crisis'). Alan Walker, the Honorary President
of the Edinburgh Association of University Teachers said, "I consider this
a crisis"; academics told Student they blamed financial
mismanagement at the LUni's Old College HQ; and Student told its
readers: "It's commendable to see the Principal acting to reduce the
University's colossal debt. But, at the end of the day, there's only one person
who's going to pay for his cuts. YOU." To cap it all, the LUni has lost
its star student, petite pouting blue-eyed blonde bombshell Elize du Toit:
the TV soap 'Hollyoaks' babe has 'interrupted' her History course at E.LU. to
advance her acting career – starting with peeling off to reveal her generous
orbs in the October edition of the lad mag Loaded. Her like will not be
with E.LU. again.
In
January 2001, E.LU. began off-loading staff and cutting student options
by closing highly popular anatomy courses in its Science faculty. A.U.T
president Alan Walker complained bitterly about the "bombshell" and
said staff were being treated "appallingly" (Student 31 Jan.
'01). In assessment of teaching by the Government-funded Quality Assurance
Agency, Edinburgh came only 41st out of 99 universities -- below the
Open University and the Universities of Bangor and Hull. This put it in the
middle of the Second Division. The top seven QAA places were taken, sensibly
enough, by Cambridge, York, London School of Economics, Oxford, Imperial
College, School of Oriental and African Studies [London] and University College
London. (From Daily Telegraph, 16 Aug. 01.) In the Sunday Times'
University Guide for 2001 (16 Sep. '01), Edinburgh slipped to position 15 among the UK's 123 universities – amazing since it came
seventh for the percentage of middle- and upper-class students which it admits.
This league table uses a wide range of published data related to teaching and
research qualities, classes of degrees awarded, staff-student ratios and
drop-out rates. It was headed as usual by Cambridge, Oxford, the London School
of Economics, Imperial College, York and University College London. Edinburgh's
rating for teaching was specially disastrous (41st); but even for
research it only came 7th, barely ahead of the University of
Lancaster. Principal Dame Stewart Sutherland of Houndwood [the
new Lord's chosen title as 'people's peer' – actually appointed by Rev. Blair]
told the Tatler that he was glad Prince William had preferred St Andrews
University to E.LU. "because it would mean having to deal with additional
problems posed by the media"; and he equally brazenly told Student (17
Oct. '01) that ratings of British universities were unfair to Scottish
universities – Student obliged him by not carrying the news of the
LUniversity's disastrous drop in Sunday Times rankings without there
having been any change at all in the criteria used. On 19 October '01,
scientists at the LUniversity of Edinburgh admitted to making a huge mistake – which was immediately broadcast widely.
For the previous five years, biologists at the LUniversity's Institute of
Animal Health had become increasingly worried that Bovine Spongiform
Encephalopathy (BSE) had spread to sheep. However, on the when publication of
their work was expected, the well-funded experts (led by one Prof. Pennington)
admitted a blunder: all along they had been studying the brains of cows, not
sheep. In November, senior Edinburgh LUniversity academics said that planning for
the merger of E.LU. Faculties into 'Colleges' [of Arts, Science, and Social
Studies] was well behind schedule and "a shambles" – probably to disguise the large number of administrative jobs
that would be abolished as soon as Principal Lady Sutherland had left the
stage. The LUniversity has had to promise 'restructuring' to the anonymous
donor who is bankrolling its 12-million-pound debt, but morale among senior
personnel is now at an all time low because no detailed plans have appeared for
discussion. December brought the devastating news that E.LU. has slipped further down the Government's league
table of 'research excellence' (Times Higher, 15 Dec. 01): from 13th in 1996,
Edinburgh fell to 16= (with Bristol University), comprehensively superseded not
only by Oxford, Cambridge, London and Manchester but also by Warwick, Cardiff,
Essex and Southampton.
In
Spring, 2002, the Guardian newspaper did not even include E.LU. in its
top twenty for teaching quality (using 2001 assessments), putting it 23rd -- beneath the universities of
Birmingham, Lancaster, Glasgow and Leeds; and E.LU.'s research rating was
little better, 17th=. Analysis
allowing for some universities submitting rather low percentages of their staff
for inspection of their research found E.LU. 20th, behind Royal Holloway College, University of London. For
Psychology teaching quality, E.LU. came 65th=
(sic);
and, out of 96 UK institutions awarding psychology degrees, E.LU. Psychology
came 63rd= according to the Guardian's 'Value
Added' estimate which compares final degree classes with students' initial
academic qualifications. Even in the Guardian's research rating, E.LU.
Psychology only came 17th . None of this was likely to impress the
LUniversity's newly chosen Principal, Timothy O'Shea, who himself graduated in
Experimental Psychology (at Sussex) and who would remember from his time as a
computer science researcher in Edinburgh of the 1970's that Edinburgh
Psychology was once second to none.}
In
Autumn, 2002, the Sunday Times (15 ix) estimated Edinburgh's position as
16th – down one place from its 2001 ranking,
and comprehensively overtaken by St Andrews, which came in as UK 6th –
Edinburgh's pre-1997 position -- and as the Sunday Times' 'University of
the Year.' For 'teaching quality', the LUniversity was 17th, and its Psychology Department was
reckoned inferior to those of Dundee, Glasgow, St Andrews and Stirling. Such
was the situation at Principal Dame Stewart's retirement – to enjoy a peerage
because he had secured English cash to pay for the bills of Scotland's old
folks' homes. (The Sunday Times secured its continued access to
Scotland's top drinking club, the Speculative Society which meets in E.LU.'s
Old College, with a ludicrous headline 'Scottish universities win top honours'.
This referred to the high percentages of students at Saint Andrews (78%) and
Edinburgh (76%) who achieve Firsts or Upper Seconds – only Cambridge, Oxford
and Bristol have higher 'honours percentages.' But these honours percentages
reflect chiefly the fact that these classically 'good universities' in nice
cities can be very choosy about their intakes: Edinburgh has eight schoolchild
applicants for each place. It is scandalous that Scottish people are never told
frankly that E.LU. has in recent years dropped out of the UK's top ten and can
now claim 'top honours' only by failing to meet the 'diversity' targets set by
the Government's funding councils – expecting universities to take more
students from low-class postcode areas.)
Edinburgh's fake 'top honours' position will not now last for long. On 1
October, 2002, the Independent (p. 1) carried the news that Edinburgh
had decided to accept the NuLabour shilling and 'widen access' (i.e. dumb down). The process involves rejecting well-qualified applicants from
leafy suburbia in favour of less well qualified candidates from 'poor postcode'
areas. The Headmasters' Conference (speaking for fee-paying schools) expressed
its fury at the resulting unfairness to applicants – which is also being
practised at up-market-intake Bristol University and the London School of
Economics in return for big government handouts. The injustice will soon be
answered by parents who will remove their children from fee-paying schools and
place them in state schools in the year before A-Levels are to be taken
(doubtless pleading sudden impoverishment or somesuch).
In 2003, the new Principal, Timothy O'Shea, gave
details of how dumbing down would be arranged (Times 19 ii). Applicants
were to be given bonus points if neither of their parents ever attended a
university, if they had any officially recognized handicap, and if they lived
in Edinburgh. The universities sub-committee of the Headmasters and
Headmistresses Conference promptly replied that, while supporting widening of
access to meritorious students, it deplored admissions procedures showing a "fundamental
lack of objectivity" and
"sidelining hard-earned grades." Affirmative classism was also
condemned by a Sunday Times leader (23 ii, 'Universities choose
failure') which said that "Bristol University and Edinburgh University are
presiding over their own demise." (Bristol was found to have rejected a
gifted Indian student, Rudi Singh, who had 5 A-grade A Levels and was an
outstanding cricketer. Singh's mistake was to have attended the famous King
Edward School, Birmingham (whose headmaster called him a "sensational"
student) and to have parents who were rich and well-educated. Following
rejection by Bristol, Singh was accepted by Cambridge University.) The Sunday
Times front-paged Comrade O'Shea's plan; and ran an inside story 'And the
last shall be first' in which "class war" between Edinburgh and parents was said to be underway, and
several LUniversity of Edinburgh top-drawer female students said how upset they
and their friends were at the LUniversity's attitude to them.
In March
2003, the LUniversity began complaining that it was being seriously underfunded compared to its elite rivals Oxford and
Cambridge (Times Higher, 28 iii, c. p. 4). Apparently grant
allocations in England respect the fact that better universities need more
money, but allocations from the Scottish Parliament make no such assumption.
What a hoot! Apparently, too, the LUniversity has not taken on board the fact
that over the last seven years of its wilful censoriousness, untruthfulness and
cash-grabbing plans to dumb down, it has ceased to be in the UK elite – having
fallen to 17th, behind its Scottish rival, the University of St.
Andrews.
May 2003 might have brought the tiniest moment of consolation to
the LUniversity of Edinburgh in that it came 14th in the Times’ assessment of overall UK quality.
However, that ranking still placed the LUni behind Loughborough and was anyhow
due principally to Edinburgh dishing out First and Upper Second Class degrees
at a rate that placed its students as the 5th best in Britain. By
contrast, the LUni’s position in research assessments was a pretty dismal 17th=,
along with the University of Essex; and its rank for teaching quality was a
terrible 27th – behind all the major Scottish universities
(St Andrews 4th, Glasgow 10th, Stirling 13th
and Aberdeen 20th). (For two hundred years, Edinburgh was among the
top six universities in the UK, retaining that position in government figures
till 1997.) Nor did the LUni do much good by way of putting its students into
occupations where a degree was necessary: on this yardstick of quality,
Edinburgh came only a disastrous 34th despite its superb student
intake. Edinburgh’s overall ranking of 14th was achieved with the
further help of getting credit for its high research income, 6th in
the UK; but it will not hang on to these big bucks once its awful record of the
past six years comes to be realized. Unsurprisingly for Britain’s most
shockably peecee university, E.LU. achieved the highest rankings in the
gruesome triad of Sociology, Social Work and Social Policy. Any other top
marks? Yes, the LUni came top for Veterinary Medicine. What do the four subject
areas have in common? Pretty plainly, E.LU. aims to thrive on compassion for
dumb animals. E.LU.’s censorious Psychology Department did even worse than the
LUni as a whole, ranking at only 25th in overall quality despite having
students whose entry results (A Levels etc.) were exceeded only by those of
students entering psychology in Oxford. Thus Edinburgh Psychology is now the
weakest link in its new administrative/academic linkage at E.LU. with
Linguistics (9th) and Philosophy (22nd).
In June, 2003, The LUniversity of Edinburgh sank to a new low in overall university ratings, just 18th= along with Southampton in a meta-analytic ‘Table of
Tables’ compiled by the Daily Telegraph (25 vi, p.17). The ToT combined
rankings from recent surveys conducted for the Daily Telegraph, the Financial
Times, the Times, and the Sunday Times and further threw in
rankings from a recent survey of
employers of graduates. September 2003 saw E.LU. still outside the
top ten UK universities, 11th according to the Sunday Times;
and in October the LUni’s students were beaten 115 points to 155 in University
Challenge by students from the University of Warwick. October saw the
LUniversity issue all its freshers with keyrings containing the slogan ‘Feeling
Down?’ alongside phone numbers of various counselling services – a response to
the continuingly high suicide rate at the university where telling the truth
was a high-risk activity.

* Note about the Edinburgh 117 The LUniversity has apparently
violated elementary justice as it did in 1996, after Psychology Lecturer Chris
Brand had written a book about race and IQ, THE g FACTOR. Faced in 1999 with
117 alleged cheats, E.LU. gave out punishments [no marks, reduced marks,
mandatory resits] with little conspicuous attention to what the students could
be proved to have done. -- Likewise, in 1996/7, the LUniversity
could never say precisely why, or for what Chris Brand was being
sacked. The LUniversity that gives way to hysterical 'anti-racists' and
feminazies for the sake of a quiet life and cash-flow must now face the music:
its management is hopeless; its academic leadership doesn't care primarily about
truth; and it has sadly ceased to behave as a university. It has tried
to treat its students as naughty children who can be given a group punishment
(mild in some cases -- but who wants to be known as a cheat?). Likewise, in
1996, the LUniversity encouraged 'ooh-err' avoidance of THE g FACTOR. The
LUniversity's own Information Office would not refer inquirers to the
controversial book (of which the E.LU. Library had three copies).
The students should
be treated as grown-ups -- and that's what the 'Edinburgh 117' are now saying.
The University says students should not go to the sacked Brand for private
tuition (Daily Record 2 Sep. '99, p. 16); but only Brand is likely to
tell students the truth about IQ, race, sex and genes. In the six-and-a-half years
since E.LU. fired him, Brand has been proved right about paedophilia typically
doing little harm (Psychol. Bull. June '98), about Black Africans having
low average IQs (even when at university in South Africa -- ISSID
Conference, Vancouver July '99, to be published in Intelligence),
about intelligence being under genetic control (Nature 2 Sep. '99,
'Genetic super-mouse') and about the deceitful promiscuity of women (Sarah
Hrdy, Mother Nature, Chatto & Windus -- reviewed in Nature 11
Nov. '99; Sunday Times 23 Jan. '00, 'One in seven fathers 'not the real
parent'', Lois Rogers, Medical Correspondent). Education Minister David
Blunkett promised (Sunday Times 22 Aug. '99) to introduce in state
schools the 'fast track learning' which Tony Blair and Chris Brand urged in
1996 -- though the latter was howled down for his trouble by 'anti-racist' mobs
in Edinburgh. Tony Blair repeated the promise in a speech in September, 2000
In 1796,
Edinburgh University -- which had refused a job to Scotland's top philosopher,
David Hume -- co-operated in having one of its own students executed in the
Grassmarket for heresy. Today, E.LU.'s management has again put the
institution's reputation at risk.
October 2001 saw the launch, both in paper
and on the Net, of a new journal dedicated to opposing the political
correctness and multiculturalism that have overtaken much conservative and
liberal thought in the West. Edited by
Washington-based librarian Kevin Lamb, the magazine is called The Occidental
Quarterly (TOQ) and is being
published by William H. Regnery II (P.O. Box 695, Mount Airy, MD 21771). In his
opening editorial, Kevin Lamb deplored the neglect of racial realities in
today's politics and concluded: " In looking to the future, we seek: a
renewal of nationalistic sentiments; a perspective forged by the lessons of
history and refined by bold rather than blunt distinctions; a genuine respect
of ethnic and cultural variation, which recognizes what Sir Francis Galton once
identified as differences in racial character; an outlook that firmly
appreciates the role of heredity in shaping human nature, and fully rejects
cultural uniformity and biological equality. We seek a future in which national
cultures and population gene pools flourish and reach advanced levels of
bio-social enrichment well beyond their current potential in the absence of
multicultural hegemonies; a future grounded upon traditional Western cultural
values of liberty, limited constitutional self-governance and meritocratic
achievement. We offer the journal before you as a forum for the examination of
these and other similar ideas."
Psychologist Glayde
Whitney was a co-founder of the project and other race-realistic psychologists,
Richard Lynn and Kevin Macdonald, are on the editorial board. The first issue
was specially focussed on the British politician Enoch Powell -- articles by
psychorealist Chris Brand (author of the banned book, 'THE 'g' FACTOR', and
here advocating 'national liberalism'*) and 'Right Now!' editor Derek Turner.
In 2001, UK Conservatives were told by their new 'right-wing' leader to
distance themselves from 'Right Now!' so Turner's revenge was swift -- he
called his article 'The English Patient' and dwelt especially on the sorry
multiculturalism of British Conservative leaders since Mrs Thatcher.
The journal is
described as A Journal of Western Thought and Opinion. It is the journal of The
Charles Martel Society. Charles Martel (688-741AD) was the grandfather of
Charlemagne and earned his nickname 'The Hammer' by his defeat of the Moors in
desperate battles (e. g. Tours in 732) which began the eventual reverse of the
Arab invasion of Western Europe.
* Brand's 'national liberalism'
involves defending Britain's way of life and liberties, for example via:
neofamilies (versus low-IQ single parenting, Christian-only type
of marriage, and state welfarism);
Kiddies' Lib (allowing adolescents choice of school stream, practical
education and on-the-job learning, sexual partners and recreational drugs – if
sanctioned by their neofamilies; votes at [mental] age 14)
mandatory choice (obliging the state always to offer choice in its
ministrations – e.g. in health insurance and in local community differences –
allowing exclusion of unwanted outsiders)
monoculturalism (insisting that immigrants speak English to a reasonable
standard, and to a high standard if holding public office, versus conventional
multiculturalism; no automatic right to bring in spouses and relatives)
statutes of limitations (no more trials of ancient crimes, no
reparations for slavery, no return of the Elgin marbles and Benin bronzes)
advance delinquency insurance (parents to take out insurance against
criminal justice system costs of their children, perhaps joining group
insurance schemes supported by churches or similar neighbourhood bodies that
would offer supervision of at-risk children)
monopoly control (ending the left-wing domination of the universities
and local government; providing exam boards among which universities would
choose where to have students examined)
PeeCee-free universities (universities not to receive state funding
while employing staff who claim that there are no realities which science can
investigate, no human cultures which are superior to any others, and no reasons
for tolerating racist speech on campus)
pro-Americanism (hoping for NAFTA membership but accepting being in the
E.U. if Washington prefers this)
neo-imperialism (obliging all Commonwealth countries, allies and
neutrals to control their population growth, accepting no 'asylum seekers' from
over-expanding countries unless they accept five-year conscription into an new
model humanitarian Army for Africa that will oust dictators like Robert Mugabe).

IN CONCLUSION:
Edinburgh's
Evening News says I have "many" supporters in the city's
University. So far, however, these possible comrades in arms have all kept
their heads well down for fear of the character assassination that was
inflicted on me by a combination of feminazie academics and the Edinburgh
University Chaplaincy. Edinburgh University maintains a ban on any discussion
of the Brand affair by its academics, yet this travesty of academic life goes
unremarked by the media. (E. LU. sweetens the Scottish press and the rest of
the Edinburgh establishment by means of an elite late-night drinking club which
it runs – called The Speculative Society. The LUniversity does not invite
discussion by even senior staff of its low position (15th) in Sunday
Times rankings.)
From Tunis, I am
advised that The g Factor is probably illegal in France – where punishable
'race hate' material now includes publications which merely make factual claims
to the effect there exist races and race differences. In Britain, both major
parties have indicated their willingness to move in an authoritarian direction
– the Conservative Shadow Home Secretary announcing a plan to stiffen penalties
against cannabis use, and Labour introducing legislation to allow e-mail
snooping without a court warrant. Faced with such horrors -- culminating soon
no doubt in penalization of 'racism' based on nothing more than the contents of
a person's computer -- I can only recommend that McDNL supporters join
the Liberal Party* en masse and change that party from within so that
its historic and noble quest for liberty comes more into line with the neolibeREALISM
of the McDougall NewsLetter.
* The hero of the
present Liberal Democrat leader, Charles Kennedy, is Lord Roy Jenkins, the
former UK Chancellor of the Exchequer whose break with Labour did so much to
ensure the Thatcher governments of the 1980's. Chainsmoking Charlie is the only
party leader to give much priority to mentioning that he supports free speech,
and the Liberal Party has a long tradition of sympathy for paedophiles and
perhaps other pariahs. The Liberals are best-placed to act firmly against
PeeCee and Multiculturalism if they only chose to do so, and they have quite
often been accused of 'racist' electioneering. The party retains its visceral
antipathy to trade unionism and has provided a lively critique of the endless
testing of children to which state education has been reduced by both
Conservatives and Labour. Given the unlikelihood of a Conservative revival, the
most obvious way for Britons to constrain NuLabour's statism, punitiveness and
illiberalism for the next five years is to turn the Liberal Democrats into an
effective Opposition.
Unfortunately, the
present Liberal Party's top brass profess themselves especially agitated by
"racist and
homophobic hate crimes" by Whites; its Shadow Home Secretary recently went
out of his way to denounce John Townend and William Hague for inflaming racial
sensitivities; and its female candidates – like those of other parties --
present pictures of scarcely relieved ugliness, antiquity and obesity. Even
Charlie Kennedy causes problems for some longstanding Liberals, since, as a
Catholic, he can have no truck with abortion, contraception or voluntary
euthanasia; and the party's Education spokesperson is the grammar
school-bashing Shirley Williams. Thus the Liberal Party has some way to go
before it can become the kind of innovative National Liberal Party that Joseph
Chamberlain led in alliance with Conservatives around 1900. Fine denunciations
of its lamentable recent support for NuLabour is provided by Times
columnists Michael
Gove and Matthew
Parris.
The tide of
PeeCee might just possibly be on the turn. In the USA in 2000, the revelation
that Harvard LUniversity had pulled out at the last moment from publishing a
book that was pro-marriage and failed to denounce all men as rapists was
greeted with open hilarity by the Wall Street Journal (18 x '00, 'What Harvard
Finds Unfit to Print', http://interactive.wsj.com/edition/past/summaries/menu.html
or http://interactive.wsj.com/articles/SB971827306722805146.htm);
and a Canadian MP braved multiculchalunatic 'outrage' by asking for Christmas
to be declared an official national holiday (Toronto Globe & Mail, 16
x '00). In Britain, the Prime Minister and Home Secretary took the trouble in
October 2000 to say they deplored an 'antiracist' report, The Future of
MultiEthnic Britain, which had wanted Britain re-named to help shake off
its racist past (its "vice-chair", married to a Labour peer, even
thought Prince Charles should be told to marry a Black woman); and, in December
2000, the Conservative leader made front-page headlines for several days by at
last criticizing the 1999 McPherson Report which had led police in
South-east London to go easy on fast-rising Black criminality so as to avoid
cries of 'racism.' In April 2001, there was broadsheet and Conservative
criticism of the government-funded Campaign for Racial Equality which had tried
to bully MPs who would not sign up as 'anti-racist' yet which would not condemn
the BBC supremo who had deplored the BBC's staff being "sickeningly
White." In June 2001, the US Supreme Court let stand a ruling that had led
Texas to end affirmative action at its public colleges and universities (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/aponline/20010625/aponline103524_000.htm).
The 9/11 atrocity exposed the folly of failing to discriminate against
undesirable visiting aliens and immigrants from terrorist-harbouring countries
– though PeeCee will doubtless fight back by urging massive surveillance of
everyone (especially White 'racists') rather than expressly searching for the
needles that have got into the Western haystack.
Currently, beside my work for the Woodhill Foundation, I am writing a chapter (with American
and Belgian co-authors) for a Festschrift dedicated to the University of
California (Berkeley) race-realist psychologist, Arthur Jensen, and reviews for
the new US magazine, Occidental Quarterly. The chapter (invited by
Pergamon Press, Oxford) will trace the history of Western ideas about
intelligence and try to explain why so many philosophers and psychologists
strangely neglected the g factor – with the spectacular exception of the
mighty Plato who (to judge by his famous Symposium) had wide experience
of late-night paedophilic drinking scenes.
More generally, WHAT CAN NEOLIBEREALISTS HOPE FOR?
Perhaps some senior
British Conservative figure like the unreconstructed Thatcherite, Lord Norman
Tebbitt, could break away and link up with the non-antiSemitic elements of the
British National Party and with a tidy number of Liberals and trade unionists
to form some kind of National Liberal* or CHOICE Party. Item Number One would be politely to deport
all relatives, immediate workmates and co-domiciled associates of proven
terrorists and advocates of terror and murder. Item Two would be to offer all
state schoolkids some choice about which classes they attend -- including the
choice to move up a year. That would end the left's grip on 'education' at a
stroke. Item Three would be to lower the age of consent (at least to the 14
which already obtains in the US state of Hawaii) and further to decriminalize
anything that was regularly being done by more than 10% of the population
(notably using cannabis). Fourth, I suspect it is time to pick up the White
man's burden and start administering the countries whose citizens are so
desperate to get out to the West -- China could usefully supply the grunt
manpower. Generally, everything would be done to offer people the option of not
having to live their lives amidst multicultural mayhem or the prospect thereof,
and to make for more choice in type of health insurance, type of marriage
contract** etc. Such a package could generate a groundswell of
enthusiasm among young people. The programme could be begun gently with such
measures as expelling asylum seekers whose claims have failed, requiring all state-employed
professionals to speak and understand English to a high standard, and
decriminalizing all non-penetrative sex involving over-12's of normal
intelligence (i.e. of Mental Age 11 or higher). Eventually all race-related
'affirmative' legislation would be repealed and people allowed once more to
discriminate if minded to do so, though the state would be obliged to give
reasons for any bias that it showed and thus to be challenged (e.g. via
Employment Tribunals). Other countries would be encouraged to build themselves
similar states providing a legal framework for making enforceable contracts and
choices.***
* The National Liberal Foundation was formed in 1877 by Joseph
Chamberlain to form caucuses and push forward radicalism. It closed in 1936 once
British politics became largely polarized on left-right lines and new
'Liberals' ruled out co-operation with Conservatives. The most famous National
Liberal Party was that of Germany under Bismarck – finally breaking with
Bismarck when he would not transfer more power to Germany's parliament.
** At present, girls are
encouraged to wait to find the perfect partner; but this doesn't happen –
either they get pregnant as teenagers by most unsatisfactory partners or they end
up on the shelf and still devoted to the feminist ideal of careers when their
fertility already begins its decline around 27. Support for 'neotraditional
marriage', for teenaged girls being encouraged to marry mature men, can be
found at http://www.angelfire.com/ga3/marriageculture/age.html.
The Communist
Party of Great Britain bravely champions abolishing the age of consent
altogether – though dealing firmly with timely complaints of harm or
intimidation. Other forms of marriage should be possible too – as discussed
under the heading 'neofamilies' in the McDougall Newsletters. Neofamilies of
around a dozen adults in size would provide a modern equivalent of the
'extended' family for children and perhaps become used by states as the major
way of arranging and dispensing education and health care.
“Women know what men have
long forgotten. The ultimate economic and spiritual unit of any civilization is
still the family.”
Claire Boothe LUCE (1903-1987).
*** Britain's eminent
political theorist, Professor John
Gray (London School of Economics), recently declared:
"States are weak or corroded in much of the Third
World and parts of the former Soviet Union. In much of the world, there is
nothing resembling an effective modern state. This has wide-ranging effects.
It's no good recommending extensive economic development, or even large-scale
humanitarian aid, if the very bases of state power are lacking. The aid will be
stolen; the aid workers will be killed. ...It's no good expecting rapid
economic development in the absence of secure property rights, contract law,
and the basic rudiments of state security."

Migrationwatch UK
is a newly established, independent, think tank which has no links to any
political party. It is chaired by Sir Andrew Green, a former Ambassador to
Saudi Arabia. Professor David Coleman, the Professor in Demography at Oxford
University, is an Honorary Consultant. We are now in the process of
establishing an Advisory Council. We appreciate the contribution that
immigrants make to our society and we entirely accept that genuine refugees
should be welcomed, but they comprise only about 10% of those who arrive in
Britain each year. Our research indicates that, on current trends, we can now
expect a net inflow of at least 2 million non EU citizens per decade. It is noteworthy that the Home
Secretary accepted our estimate when it was put to him by the Home Affairs
Committee on 18 Sept 2002. We believe that immigration on such a scale is
contrary to the interests of all sections of our community. We intend to
monitor developments, conduct research, and provide the public with full and
accurate facts placed in their proper context. In due course, we will make recommendations for policy. We
believe that many of the arguments adduced in favour of the current large-scale
immigration are unsound either in fact or in economics, or both. We wish to
ensure that they are thoroughly examined.
