Welcome to:
Chris Brand – Psychorealist

Psychorealism = believing that mentality can be measured and understood (if chiefly via its products) independently of our perception, language, social conventions, social structures etc. Psychorealism provides an alternative term to ‘psychology’ – a subject that has lost all coherence, partly through its practitioners’ cowardly neglect of the main measurable feature in human psychology, general intelligence (the g factor).

“Obviously, the most extreme Idealist is Wittgenstein – whom Iris Murdoch described as ‘The Devil’.”
– A. N. Wilson, Iris Murdoch, London : Hutchinson, 2003.

Welcome to the fight against Political Correctness*, Multiculturalism** and Feminazism
 – the war which modern 'conservatives' are too fearful to wage,
so it must be conducted by modern National Liberals.

* Political Correctness (PeeCee) insists that there is no meaningful behavioural or ability difference between men and women; that no meaningful distinction can be made between people on the grounds of race or cultural difference; that all conscious human behaviour is culturally determined; that  homosexuality is as normal a state as heterosexuality; that the physically and mentally handicapped are not handicapped but "differently abled"; and that any important genetic differences between people must certainly not be mentioned. PeeCee actually dates back to the Soviet Union of the 1920s (politicheskaya pravil'nost in Russian), and was the Communist extension of political control to education, psychiatry, ethics, and behaviour. PeeCee was then, as now, intended to boost ethnic minorities against the dominant Russian majority; but historian G. A. Hosking records that "the system actually exacerbated ethnic animosity instead of healing" and was replaced by demands for integration in 1932 (The Russian Problem, 2002).

** "The main tenet of multiculturalism — that there is no absolute standard for measuring the respective worth of any given culture — has been shattered by 9/11. It too will enter into American folklore, along with such other false knowledge from past ages as phrenology, séances, periodic enemas, and dream analysis. …. Let us hope perhaps that we can return to the honesty and realism of classical 19th-century Western liberalism…." – Victor Davis HANSON, 2002, US National Review, February.
“To a large extent, the harmony and happiness that multicultural, multiracial empires are supposed to experience derive from one or two factors: the unwillingness of one cultural-racial group to resist at all, or the ability of one such group simply to dominate all the others and impose peace among them.” – Sam FRANCIS, 2003, VDare, April 7.

*** Classic role models of National Liberalism:
Viscount Henry 'Firebrand' Palmerston (1784-1865; Prime Minister 1855-57, 1859-65; probably had the prettiest wife of all PM’s, and later many mistresses; though an Anglican who declined the Governorship of "the negroes" of Jamaica, he discovered Adam Smith while at Edinburgh University and always keenly backed free trade, Catholic emancipation, the abolition of slavery and many national independence movements against absolutist rulers; but he placed high store by law as well as liberty and deplored and blocked Gladstone’s idea of giving the vote to the mentally incapacitated.) He was "….simultaneously an aristocrat, a reformer, a free trader, an internationalist and a chauvinist" – H.C.G. MATTHEW (1988), 'The Liberal Age' in Oxford History of Britain. “This most magnificent of prime minister’s [achievements] included midwifing the birth of Italy, destroying the slave trade….and creating a constitutional monarchy in Belgium  that survives to this day.” – Andrew ROBERTS (2004), ‘Not the Queen’s darling’, Sunday Telegraph (Review), 9 v. For another review stressing Palmerston’s patriotism, pragmatism, liberalism, John Bull image and attractiveness to women, see T. G. OTTE (2004), ‘Devil’s son’,* Times Literary Supplement, 27 viii, pp. 6-7. *According to reactionary Germans of the 1850’s, ‘If the devil has a son / Surely it is Palmerston.’
Joseph Chamberlain
(1836-1914), the radical imperialist who was UK Liberal Unionist leader 1891-1906. "What Chamberlain sought was a dynamic policy to forestall the polarization of the classes." – Jonathan CLARKE, 1992, A Question of Leadership, Penguin.
David Lloyd-George (1863-1945), the radical, progressive and nationalist believed by the late Lord (Roy) JENKINS (2001, Churchill, Macmillan) to have been Britain's second-greatest twentieth-century prime minister (after Sir Winston Churchill, who himself served for several years with and under Lloyd-George).
Gustav Stresemann (1878-1929), the longest-serving Chancellor of Germany's Weimar Republic, standing for free trade, democracy and a judicious blend of nationalist and internationalist objectives, and only failing by his untimely death to become a German President who could have blocked the rise of Hitler – Jonathan WRIGHT, 2002, 'Weimar's greatest statesman', History Today, xi. Stresemann told his party, “I can see only that we must work with the left because parts of the right in Germany have gone mad.”
A modern example of national liberalism (or neo-liberalism) is the Czech President
Václav Klaus – Thatcherite and Eurosceptic. National liberalism was advocated in the 1990’s by American political scientist Michael Lind.

Britain had its own National Liberal Party from 1931  (when it helped Labour limit free trade to deal with the Depression) till 1960 (it had largely merged with the Conservative Party from 1947). Germany had a National Liberal Party from 1867 to 1918 – it advocated constitutionalism, a laissez-faire economic policy, secularization, and material progress and its chief hope being to restrict the autocratic tendencies of Bismarck.

“The behaviour of states towards immigration comes very close to what we believe to be the ‘national liberal’ attitude of most people. Migrants come in rather freely if they are wealthy and will pay tax, or are very talented and can be expected to contribute more than they consume. But all states now prevent the entry, if they can, of large numbers of poor immigrants: they would probably make the state’s own poor worse off, and if too numerous would not assimilate, and would be likely to create ethnic or communal problems.”

The Scientific American provides an introduction to the g factor (the main factor in IQ-type tests).
The Annual Review of Psychology provides a summary of modern research into human individual differences, including g.

Times Higher [UK] provided a brief 'idiot's guide' to modern work on IQ and g (2 xi 2001, pp. 16-17, Harriet Swain and Robert Plomin) as did the BBC when claiming to have tested Britain's national intelligence (without giving any details of sampling….).

This is what happened to psychologist and race realist Chris Brand at Edinburgh University (Looneyversity).

Academics today are cowed by political correctness (PeeCee).
They won't discuss inheritance if doing so brings them up against multicultural or feminist (feminazie) dogma.
They won't read THE
g FACTOR. They won't even defend free speech.
Yet still, as Edinburgh's Evening News has put it, "the Brand plays on"
– with special thanks since 2000 to the Woodhill Foundation (USA) and its realistic humanism!

Brand's scholarly answer to the once-élite LUniversity of Edinburgh
(now down to 18th in UK ‘table of tables’, and down to 27th for its teaching quality):

“Most of us agree that the notion of ‘race’ is a human creation, with no basis in genetics or biology.”

Andrew HACKER ( Professor of Political Science, Queens College, New York), New York Review of Books, 14 viii 2003

“America may have 50,000 online cops [trying to entrap paedophiles], but there is little co-ordination. A lot of the time they are simply talking to each other and not catching anybody.”

Tony THOMPSON, 2003, ‘Net closes on paedophiles,’ Observer, 17 viii.

“The killers are loose again in the most traumatised country in the world. Of the 120,000 jailed for their part in the Rwandan genocide, a third were granted amnesty in May are are now living as neighbours with the people whose families they butchered barely nine years ago.  It is an experiment in reconciliation unlike anything ever tried before…. Such was the scale of the crime committed against the Tutsis [800,000 died in 100 days in 1994, and many women watched their offspring cut to pieces – arms, legs and necks – and were then raped by the murderers drenches in their children’s blood] that for [Rwandan Patriotic Front leader, Paul Kagame] to pardon 40,000 Hutu killers is generosity on an unimaginable scale. One factor helping Rwandans turn the other cheek is that religion does not divide them [i.e. the Tutsis and the Hutus]. Rwanda is the most overwhelmingly Christian country in Africa.”
John CARLIN, 2003, ‘New dawn in Rwanda as a nation forgives.’ Observer, 24 viii.
     { Lynn & Vanhanen, IQ and the Wealth of Nations, estimate that Rwandans have an average IQ of 70.}

“….although there is, alas, racism in the world, there is no such thing as race. This is not a paradox. Racism is an extreme form of xenophobia based chiefly on skin colour as the most easily reocognisable marker of difference. But as a biological concept, “race” is an empty one. ….The scientific evidence shows that such supposed “racial” characteristics” as skin colour and hair texture are merely superficial – the genes governing them can be switched on and off in an entire population in less than 10,000 years, making a “black” people “white”, and vice versa, depending on how much sunlight they habitually encounter. ….Not a few famous Britons were, in fact, “black” or of black ancestry, among them the patron saint, St George; Dr Johnson’s beloved valet Francis Barber; George III’s wife Queen Charlotte; the essayist Leigh Hunt; composer Samuel Coleridge Taylor; and Florence Nightingale’s reoubtable Crimean colleague, Mary Seacole.”
A. C. GRAYLING (‘philosopher’), 2003, Times 25 x (Weekend Review).

“There are very few examples of children who have been given lots of money and who have done well by it.”

David GILMOUR (guitarist for the pop group Pink Floyd, with a personal fortune of £75 million), reported in Times, 21 v 2003.

“{Zimbabwe’s Black leader, Robert Mugabe} is engaging in state-sponsored terror and famine that cannot be allowed. You people should be demanding that Mugabe step down.”

Popstar and aid-raiser Bob GELDOF, speaking to African leaders assembled in Ethiopia after they had failed to halt or even complain about seven years of increasing tyranny in Zimbabwe, reported in the Times, 28 v 2003.

“The level playing field was a nice idea. Handicapping your own side is not.”

Ruth Dudley EDWARDS (Irish historian, resident in England), deploring the British Establishment’s ceaseless pandering to the IRA, kindred minorities and Political Correctness, Daily Telegraph, 29 v 2003

“You cannot simultaneously have free immigration and a welfare state. I would like to see a world where you could have open immigration, but stop kidding yourselves!”

Milton FRIEDMAN, Nobel Prize-winning economist, 2003

“The Blair government seems to want to do everything it can to erode British national identity, for which there can be no more potent solvent than mass immigration. Rather than try to ascertain exactly what is going on, how much it is all costing, and what can be done to stop it, as a royal commission would have done, it pretends that nothing is wrong and denounces as a racist anyone who suggests otherwise.”
Angela ELLIS-JONES, 2003, Spectator, 21 vi

“The common criticism [of British state schools] is that the classes tend to be too large, which is true, but the real problem is the teaching style which ignores sound old-fashioned methods. Far too much teacher-time is wasted on a troublesome minority at the expense of the better-behaved majority; brighter children lose their will to work, either through peer pressure or because they are continually slowed by the pace of the weakest in the class.”
James DELINGPOLE, 2003, ‘To hell with The Guardian’s legions of liberal Lefties and their blind faith in state education.’ Sunday Telegraph, 13 vii.

“One unexpected consequence [of my retirement from university life] was a feeling of liberation. Ironically, the very institution that invented tenure to safeguard free speech has become a place of stultifying political correctness. Small wonder that a former U.S. secretary of education called universities “... islands of repression in a sea of freedom.””
Emeritus Professor Ian HUNTER (University of Western Ontario), 2003, National Post, 17 vii (http://www.nationalpost.com/commentary/story.html?id=E7D1E217-B327-4F29-BF55-60F91CA23D6C).

“….if the Government rejects health tests [for would-be immigrants], it will be showing that it cares more for the rights of immigrants than the rights of the public. It shouldn’t be surprised if the public ends up caring neither for the Government nor the immigrants.”
Anthony Browne, Environment Editor, Times, 5 viii 2003.

“Human rights groups estimate around four million have died [in Black-on-Black violence] in the Congo over the past five years. ….In Congo for the past 50 years, tales of cannibalism have been apocryphal. Today they are a norm.”
Sam KILEY, 2003, ‘Chaos and cannibalism under Congo’s bloody skies,’ Observer, 17 viii.

“My Iraqi contacts have been telling me to get out. They say anyone with a white face is now a target.”
Businessman Tom BLUDENELL-BRUCE, a London-based oil expert visiting Baghdad to assist the Iraqi state oil company, reported Daily Telegraph, 21 viii 2003.

“….today, the world has grown numb to the scale of African horror. In late colonial times, nine deaths in a British-run prison in Kenya could rock a government in Westminster. Today, a few tens of thousands reported massacred in Rwanda, or a vastly greater number proved to be dying of Aids, makes five column inches on an inside page.”
Tom STACEY, Spectator, 23 viii 2003.

Why I Am Not a Muslim is a sometimes brilliant, sometimes maddeningly repetitive broadside. In it, ‘Ibn Warraq’ [a pseudonym to protect the apostate] takes pains to distinguish religious Islam from ``Islamic civilization,'' which, he says, ``often reached magnificent heights despite [the Koran and the theologians] and not because of them.'' (While few fundamentalists would admit as much, freethinkers have been signal figures of Islamic civilization. Consider the well-known 11th-century Syrian-born poet Abu al-Ala al-Maarri, who wrote: ``The earth has people of two kinds:/The ones who think have no religion,/the others do and have no minds.'')
Warraq's book cuts against the ecumenical, feel-good vision of Islam as a ``religion of peace'' found everywhere from President Bush's speeches to popular books such as Karen Armstrong's ``Islam: A Short History.'' Indeed, anyone who's read Armstrong's book may think that she and Warraq are discussing two entirely different belief systems. Armstrong, for example, says that it's impossible to judge the prophet Muhammad's assassinations of his political enemies and wholesale slaughter of a Jewish tribe against our present-day mores. But if we cannot condemn his faults according to contemporary standards, Warraq argues, then neither can we hold him up as the wise and tolerant lawgiver whom contemporary moderates praise.
Warraq also contends that Islam's apologists are so eager to perpetuate the ``myth'' of a tolerant Islam that accorded liberty to its non-Muslim subjects that they concentrate almost exclusively on the relatively decent treatment of Christians and Jews, the so-called fellow People of the Book, while ignoring the harsher fate of Arab pagans, Zoroastrians, Hindus, and Buddhists. ``Are they not human?'' he asks.
While some evangelical Christians have embraced his work, Warraq has been critical of that faith as well. Still, Warraq says he much prefers Christianity's philosophy, which ``teaches God's love, a far cry from Islam's wrathful image of God.'' In Why I Am Not a Muslim, he adds that while ``most Christians'' have moved away from a ``literal interpretation of the Bible,'' Muslims have not. ``All Muslims–not just the group we have called fundamentalists–believe that the Koran is literally the word of God,'' delivered directly, word for word, to his prophet Muhammad, he says.
Lee SMITH, 2003, Boston Globe, 17 viii.
       {According to William McDougall, 1924, Ethics and Some Modern World Problems, Islamic tyranny and egalitarianism allowed a rapid expansion in its first few centuries; but then the religion went in to decline from failing to allow the setting-up of nation states (it was “lacking in conservative influence” and turned its conquered peoples into disloyal and non-self-sacrificing “cosmopolitans”) – and from interbreeding with Africans.}

“[For the moderate Muslim majority to speak out] is not enough. What the community must do is to inculcate a commitment, as British citizens, to the rule of law, the avoidance of violence, the principle of tolerance and the moral values of this country.”
Leading article, 2003, Times, 3 xii.

“Lumping young people of widely ranging ability in one group and expecting them all to achieve is haopeless, as has been proved over and over.”
Jenny HJUL, 2004, Sunday Times, 1 ii.

“The only way Africa can save itself is to be re-colonised, no ifs or buts about it.”
‘Taki’, 2004, Spectator, 14 ii.

News item – Headstart benefits in multicultural society…

"Police raided the premises of Headstart Education, in south-west London, after a tip-off from [an examination board]. They found pupils looking at a paper that was to have been taken by 300,000 candidates the following morning." – Times, 13 vi '02

{The papers had been stolen from a south London school where she worked for 13 years by Pakistani teacher Farzana Akbar,  46, who had been brought to Britain in 1962 and always dedicated herself to helping the Pakistani community. She was exposed by an honest student at her husband's privately-run crammer school who realised what had happened. – Daily Telegraph, 3 viii '02. She was finally jailed for three months.}

Corking Quotes of Yesteryear

“….if there be a Faith, from of old, it is this, as we often repeat, that no Lie can live for ever. The very Truth has to change its vesture, from time to time; and be born again. But all Lies have sentence of death written down against them, and Heaven`s Chancery itself; and, slowly or fast, advance incessantly towards their hour.”
Thomas CARLYLE, 1837, The French Revolution: A History, Book 1.

After the uprising of the 17th June
The Secretary of the Writers Union
Had leaflets distributed in the Stalinallee
Stating that the people
Had forfeited the confidence of the government
And could win it back only
By redoubled efforts. Would it not be easier
In that case for the government
To dissolve the people
And elect another?

Bertold BRECHT, 1953.

Yet, despite this well-known ironical verse, the governments of the West embarked on population change in the 1990’s – encouraging their women towards childless careers and admitting Mexicans, Caribbeans and Muslims for their liberal-left voting likelihood and cheap (especially when illegal) labour.

Know your enemy! --

Both humanists and the public hanker after rationality in the first, stronger sense of the term: a sense which is associated with objective truth, correspondence to reality, and method, and criteria. We should not try to satisfy this hankering, but rather try to eradicate it."

Richard RORTY, 1987, Science and Solidarity.

"A multicultural society is a contradiction in terms, dissolving society into competing fragments. It gives people nothing to identify with or hold in common with each other. It creates instead a grievance culture in which minorities present themselves as victims."

      Melanie PHILLIPS, 2001, Sunday Times 2 ix. {Melanie Phillips was long a regular columnist for the left-wing Observer newspaper.}

"The borders of Western countries are under siege and the West needs to consider incentives for would-be migrants to stay at home."

EDITORIAL, Sunday Times 2 ix 2001.

"....until we free ourselves of the constraints of multiculturalist dogma, and reaffirm the central importance of historic American culture and immigrant assimilation into that culture, we will face an immigrant situation that is not only a social problem, but also a national security risk."

VDARE.COM, 19 x 2001 (http://www.vdare.com/misc/izumi_assimilation.htm).

"[Home Secretary David Blunkett's] outburst [urging that immigrants learn English and renounce arranged marriages and genital mutilation] is quite useful. The pussyfooting fake reverence for immigrant "cultures" has done damage to British life."

Top Times columnist Libby PURVES, 11 xii 01

"A Sunday Times survey has found that four of ten British Muslims believe Osama bin Laden is justified in mounting his war against the USA. ….liberal Britain has got to get real and ditch the multiculturalism that is now a menace to life and liberty."

Melanie PHILLIPS, 2001, Sunday Times, 4 xi 01.

"{Because of deciding to pursue multiculturalism and 'diversity',} Britain became the capital of world Islamism during the 1990s."

(From the lead review in Times Literary Supplement, 27 vi 2002)

"Please don't kick the ambassador out of London for saying this, but if you go around the Muslim world, you will find the vast majority of people will support Osama bin Laden, and this is more tragic than the attack itself [i.e. 9/11]. Why would such a crime like this find such support, not just on the streeets of Riyadh, but on the streets of Turkey, the streets of Tunis, the streets of Britain?"

Ghazi ALGOSAIBI, 62, Saudi Ambassador to Britain. Talking to Boris Johnson, Spectator 7 ix 2002.

"A white racist is someone who believes that white civilization is superior to black civilization, and is happy about it. A black racist is someone who believes white civilization is superior to black civilization, and is furious about it."

Enoch was right!

Christopher Brand is the author of The g Factor. This 1996 book on general intelligence (g)* was favourably reviewed in the top science magazine Nature on 5 May, 1996; but by that time the book had already been withdrawn from UK bookshops by its publisher. Wiley & Sons (Chichester, UK) had been told by its head office in New York that Brand's politically incorrect claims about race differences were "repellent." Wiley's decision to withdraw the book gave the green light for 'anti-racists' in Scotland to demand that Brand endure an inquisition for his 'scientific racism' which would hopefully end in his being publicly humiliated and banned from teaching.

* See e.g. Scientific American's introduction to the g factor (the main factor in IQ-type tests).

Readily affirming hereditarian views on race, IQ, and sex differences, but repeatedly asking that his book be re-published and actually read by his critics, Brand was eventually fired by Edinburgh University in August 1997. His dismissal followed twenty-six years of unblemished academic service and one year of him being publicly denounced by his own University Principal as "obnoxious." Though he was cleared by senior Edinburgh academics of a raft of spurious charges -- of "unfairness" as a teacher and examiner, of lack of repute as a researcher, and of having done "damage" to the University -- a mere one page of e-mail which he had copied to the Edinburgh University Chaplain was judged to have been a sackable "disgrace."

The e-mail item had been just one page of The g Factor NewsLetter which was published every few days during 1996 to defend Brand's book and views and to denounce illiberalism of all kinds – as well as the modern censorship which Brand was himself experiencing. NewsLetters were sent regularly to the Chaplain, at that dominie's request, to help him 'counsel students upset by racism'; but in fact the Chaplain, the Rev. Iain Whyte, attended protest rallies mounted by the 'Anti-Nazi League.' The 16 October 1996 NewsLetter issue included a suggestion of clemency for an American Nobel Prize-winner facing 30 years in jail for non-violent and apparently inconsequential paedophilic indecency with a teenage boy, one of some 50 children he had legally and very helpfully adopted (mainly from Papua New Guinea). The extract was taken to Scotland's tabloid press three weeks later. (This gift to the tabloid occurred just when Oxford University Press had been persuaded to show interest in re-publishing The g Factor and the University Principal had written to the Scottish press to reposition himself, now saying he had no criticism of The g Factor for he had never read it.) A media firestorm promptly followed, leading to the University setting up a Tribunal and – after three months of evidence and deliberations – to Brand being dismissed.

Such was the revenge of the politically correct on race-realist Brand and The g Factor. The 'academic publisher' and the university principal [Sir Stewart Sutherland] who denounced Brand without ever reading his book effectively threw him to the mob which proved classically insatiable -- especially since only a half dozen academics ever came forward to defend even Brand's right to free speech. Even this display of ‘antiracism’ was not sufficient for history professor Tony Kushner, director of a Jewish history centre at Southampton University, who publicly urged more “punishment” of Brand. However, in a 1999 moral victory, Brand extracted £12,000 from Edinburgh University, equal to the maximum sum that could in those days be won from courts in the United Kingdom for unfair dismissal (Times [London] 29 Oct. '99, p. 2). Edinburgh University actually said it was paying out "to prevent the airing of Brand's opinions and views at public expense" (Times Higher 5 Nov. '99, p. 2) -- showing the modern disdain preferred by PeeCee to any open contest of ideas.

Brand has long been known to readers of Nature, Times Higher, Behaviour Research & Therapy, Personality & Individual Differences and European Journal of Personality. He is a Fellow of the Galton Institute and a supporter of the 'London School' of psychology – backing the main ideas of the famous British psychologists Sir Francis Galton, Charles Spearman, Sir Cyril Burt and Hans Eysenck. Researches by Brand and his students have indicated that g is not primarily 'knowledge.' Rather, g involves a fast speed of intake for even the simplest information about the world. (In trade terms, IQ correlates around -.50 with the exposure time [or 'inspection time'] needed for tachistoscopic recognition.)

Brand continues to hope that some publisher will daringly show an interest in his proposed biography of William McDougall FRS, the instinct psychologist who was professor of psychology at Harvard from 1920 to 1926 but was later ignored because he had opposed behaviourism, egalitarianism and social environmentalism.  Wiley DePublisher insists on retaining copyright on The g Factor (1996) unless and until Brand promises to stop criticizing Abominable Wiley's nauseating conduct, but a revised (2001) version is available free online at http://www.douance.org/qi/brandtgf.htm.

For the kind of wilfully ignorant criticism mounted by the UK 'Anti-Nazi League', see e.g. http://platon.ee.duth.gr/data/maillist-archives/cyberurbanity/1997/msg00138.html: this far-left group claimed "the work was withdrawn partly through political pressure, but also because of unsubstantiated claims contained within it which masqueraded as 'science', and the quality of the research upon which it was based." According to the neo-Stalinist magazine Challenge (24 Sep. 1997, http://www.plp.org/cd97/cd924.html )"Brand is part of an international academic network that includes Arthur Jensen, Charles Murray and Dinesh D’Souza in the U.S., J. Philippe Rushton in Canada, and Richard Lynn and H. J. Eysenck in the U.K. These reborn Nazis get big bucks from the Nazi Pioneer Fund and from New Money foundations such as the Bradley Foundation." (In fact, Brand – a psychology lecturer and personality theorist -- never requested or received any such funding.) For modern hysteria in the West about 'scientific racism', and how Brand came to break the taboo, go to http://ds.dial.pipex.com/hhe/ind97.htm. There, what happened to Brand is denounced as "a new, subtle form of censorship, where nobody desires to be called a "censor", but under which inconvenient people will simply not get their books published at all."

In the seven years since his publisher let him down and Edinburgh University moved to fire him, psychologist Brand has been academically vindicated. There is fresh and strong support for all the main propositions which Brand championed.

  1. The g factor -- unitary, innate, linearly rankable intelligence, linked to basic information processes and having causal status -- is still entirely intact as a key psychological postulate. A whole issue of the international academic journal Intelligence (26, 3, 1998) was devoted to honouring Emeritus Professor Arthur Jensen, the Californian psychologist who became, after 1969, the leading scholar in the study of people's differences in general intelligence. London School theorizing about g was commended to the attention of a wider audience of US intellectuals by a young Harvard academic (Commentary, Aug. '98, 'IQ since The Bell Curve'). In mice, levels of something like g have proved to be alterable by genetic engineering (Nature 2 Sep. '99, 'Genetic super-mouse'). The Princeton creator of the learning-boosted mice is now working with Eureka Pharmaceuticals and writes, “it would not be totally surprising if enhancing learning and memory skills led to improved intelligence” (Scientific American Apr. 2000, ‘Building a brainier mouse’). The case that Chromosome 6 houses an "intelligence gene” is outlined in Matt Ridley’s Genome (2000, HarperCollins)  -- the original report of this allele, which adds 4 IQ points to possessors' intelligence, was by M. J. Chorley et al. (Psychol. Science 9, 1998). According to new Cambridge University and German research using PET scanning as 13 subjects solved a variety of IQ-type problems, a neural basis for general intelligence may be the prefrontal cortex (Science 21 vii 2000; New York Times 21 vii 2000, 'Study finds region of brain may be key problem solver'; http://washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A17618-2000Jul20.html). More electrical activity in the prefrontal cortex was found in higher-IQ testees as  they worked on an elementary cognitive task (Times, 17 iii 2003, p. 1). US scientists at NHS have found important DNA differences between high-IQ children and normal controls (http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/sci/tech/newsid_850000/850358.stm); and a hormone, beta catenin, has been found which contributes especially to the cortical growth in which homo sapiens is so distinguished. New data showing that the g factor is especially strong and important across the bottom half of the IQ range will be presented (by Brand, Constales and Kane – ABSTRACT below) in a forthcoming Festschrift for Arthur Jensen (H. Nyborg, ed.; Oxford, Pergamon, 2003). Psychologists from Madrid provided further evidence of ‘differentiation’ – of the g factor becoming less pronounced among higher-ability testees (Intelligence 30, 5, esp. pp. 458-9); and a West of Scotland study of 900 normal people of ages 15-55 showed that reaction time correlates with g only in the bottom half of the IQ range (Intelligence 31, 5, p.496). The g Factor, 1996/2001, sets out evidence that 'mental speed of intake', measured by Inspection Time (IT), is especially strongly related to IQ differences below IQ 100. A new basic processing measure, Frequency Accrual Speed Test (FAST), involves judging which of two lamps is flashing more frequently: even in undergraduates (having restricted IQ variance) FAST correlates strongly (r=.56) with nonverbal intelligence (Ettinger & Corr, 2001, European J. Personality (15, 2). The correlation between information processing speed and g is attributable almost entirely to genetic factors – Neubauer et al., 2001, Intelligence. Though some studies have linked IT equally to ‘visual speed’, an IQ-IT correlation of -.70 was reported in Intelligence in 2004 (in a rare study involving some non-students). IQ has a stability of .73 across the life span (age 11 – 77), determines many life-style and life-outcome variables (e.g. Brand, 1996, J. Biosocial Sci. 28, 387-404) and even has a correlation of .18 across 70 years with age-at-death which is not explicable in terms of parental occupation or degree of childhood overcrowding (Whalley & Deary, 2001, Brit. Med. J. 322, 7 iv). The 'multiple intelligence' claims of Robert Sternberg and Howard Gardner are much overstated – see e.g. 'Sternberg research team is mistaken: its data do not reveal an independent practical intelligence that rivals g.' Experimental psychologists continue to discover the g factor even though they prefer to call it 'working memory' (Miyake et al., 2001). In 2002, the decline of intelligence that occurs in Alzheimers disease was traced to the gene apolipoprotein E4 (APOE4) which is carried by 25% of people and creates nerve cell changes in the frontal cortex (Duke University Medical Center http://www.mc.duke.edu/). Wisconsin researchers reported that IT performance correlated .63 with fluid g in 40 college students having a mean fluid IQ of 106; correction for restriction of IQ range (only 86-123) made the true correlation .74, and the researchers concluded the IT-IQ link did not just arise from visuo-spatial abilities (David C. Osmon [neuropsy@uwm.edu] & Rebecca Jackson, 2002, Intelligence 30, 2, 119-127). Declines in IQ from age 11 to age 80 (even in people not suffering Alzheimer's Disease) has been linked to the apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotype (Deary et al., Nature, 29 viii 02); and a study of 3,263 Newcastle residents confirmed that (unlike vocabulary scores) “fluid mental ability sharply decline[s] from 49 to 92 years (Rabbitt et al., 2003, Brit. J. Psychol. 94). A gene has been found for microcephaly (small brain size, resulting in mental retardation) – reported in Nature Genetics. Progress in finding precise genes for IQ was reported by a Manchester University team including top cognitive psychologist P. M. A. Rabbitt in Molecular Psychiatry 8, 1, 14-18 (2003). Neuroscientists (including Harvard’s Christopher Chabris) using Advanced Progressive Matrices reported that brighter subjects show more brain activity in some areas (lateral prefrontal cortex, cerebellum and anterior cingulate cortex) when undertaking a parallel processing task requiring both memory updates and sustained attention (New York Times, 17 ii ‘03). Dr. Earl Miller, a professor of neuroscience at the Picower Center for Learning and Memory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said, "The idea that performance on a task that's supposed to tap into general intelligence can predict real differences in activity in the brain lends support for the idea that there is a general intelligence." (A similar task, paced serial addition, was first found to be strongly linked to g by Vincent Egan – see Brand, The g Factor, 1996.) In 2004, University of California researchers led by paediatrician Richard Haier found greater brain activation in grey matter at specific brain sites (especially in the frontal lobes) when subjects took IQ tests. A paper in the Journal of Neuroscience (L. D. Matzel et al., 2003) demonstrated the existence of the g factor in mice: the authors claimed that ‘‘across species and test batteries, converging evidence is emerging from which to infer the existence in laboratory animals of a general influence on cognitive abilities that transcends sensory, motor, and motivational demands, as well as neuroanatomical learning systems and ‘domains’ of abilities,’’ and they explicitly cited Jensen. Chicago biomedical researchers reported a gene, called ASPM, likely to be responsible for the evolutionary growth of the human brain (Discover Magazine, 4 iii 04). Copious evidence of g’s causal influence on literacy, educational level, job level and health (even across above-adequate levels of income) was reviewed by Linda Gottfredson (J.Person.&Soc.Psychol.86, 1, 174-199, 2004). From Adelaide, Burns & Nettelbeck reported no relation of IT to the g factor (Intelligence, 2003), but their subjects had a mean IQ of 124 and even Wechsler Perform Performance IQ did not related to g, so their work is most simply regarded as showing – like Brand, Constles & Kane -- that the g factor differentiates (breaks up) at high levels of IQ.

  2. The early social environments supplied for children by their parents are unimportant in causing lasting differences in personality or intellect -- except when the parents are cruel (John T. Bruer, 1999, The Myth of the First Three Years, New York:Free Press). Intelligence editor Douglas Detterman (who himself doubted the g factor in the 1980's) has deplored the "absurd environmentalism" of latter-day behaviourists such as Britain's late M. J. A. Howe (1998, Behavioral & Brain Sciences 21, 3, 411-2). For reviews of Bruer [all supportive, and referring to similar conclusions by David Rowe and Judith Rich Harris], see Science 8 Oct. '99, Nature 14 Oct. 1999, New Yorker 10 Jan. 2000 and New York Review of Books 9 Mar. 2000. {All the reviews were summarized in McDougall NewsLetters Winter 1999/2000.} In a USA sample of thousands of families, divorce had no detectable adverse psychological impact on 90% of children (Professor E. Mavis Hetherington – Observer 27 i 2002). A Norwegian team has lately confirmed 1969 estimates that birthweight predicts only 2% of variance in later IQ, thus invalidating many stories envisaging that poor nutrition and medical care cause low IQ (Archives of Disease in Childhood 2000; 83:25-30). A summary of modern psychogenetic results in Science showed heritabilities around 65% for psychological differences, and very little influence of shared family environment (P. McGuffin, B. Riley & R. Plomin (2001). 'Toward behavioral genomics.' Science 291, 1232-3, 16 ii). In a study of 558 twin pairs in London, musical ability turned out to be 80% heritable (Times 9 March 2001; http://news.bbc.co.uk/low/english/health/newsid_1209000/1209186.stm). David Rowe's Biology and Crime (Roxbury, 2000) exhibits similar realism about the importance of genetic factors in crime. In November 2001, a UCLA team reported in Nature Neuroscience (5 xi) that the amount of gray matter in the frontal parts of the human brain is determined by the genetic make-up of an individual's parents, and strongly correlates with that individual's cognitive ability, as measured by intelligence test scores. The twin researchers wrote: "We found that brain structure is under significant genetic control, in a broad anatomical region that includes frontal and language-related cortices. The quantity of frontal grey matter, in particular, was most similar in individuals who were genetically alike; intriguingly, these individual differences in brain structure were tightly linked with individual differences in IQ." Confirmation of this result came swiftly from a Dutch twin-study team (Nature Neuroscience, ii 2002) which found heritabilities around .85 for both IQ and brain volume and that the .40 correlation between them was wholly genetic. From California came a firm result that higher-IQ have more grey matter in brain areas activated during IQ testing (especially in the frontal lobes) (Haier, 2004). Far from being attributable to musical exposure and practice, pitch discrimination is 75% heritable (Nature, 7 ii 02, News & Views). A study of 1,189 twin pairs found MZs much more similar in ability and school achievement in ways that could not be explained by greater similarity of social environment ('Genetics 'play key  role in determining child's IQ'', Daily Telegraph, 18 iii 02, reporting Annual Conference of British Psychological Society). Britain's top psychiatrist, Sir Michael Rutter (Maudsley Hospital, London), largely avoided the temptation to say all development is 'a complex interaction effect of nature and nurture' when he wrote in Times Higher (29 iii 2002, p. 15): "The independent importance of genetic effects has the strongest factual basis. Evidence concerning both schizophrenia and autism, for example, indicates that the genetic risks for these disorders are not dependent on the children encountering environmental hazards." After years of asthma being blamed on 'dominant mothers' and obsessionally clean homes, a gene was found to account substantially for 40% of cases. Autism, too, should not be blamed on the environments provided by 'refrigerator' or otherwise socially unskilled mothers.
  3. Like many other allegedly* stressful or even 'traumatizing' events, non-violent paedophilia involving young teenagers [sometimes called ephebophilia] typically does no measurable harm (Bruce Rind et al., Psychological Bulletin June '98; McDougall NewsLetters Spring and Summer '99; T. D. Oellerich, 2000, Sexuality & Culture 4, 2, 67-81). Rind et al. concluded: "The results of our reviews clearly show that the assumptions of most mental health professionals, legislators, law enforcement personnel, media workers, and the lay public that sexual relations defined as Child Sex Abuse cause intense harm pervasively for both boys and girls are vastly exaggerated." (In Psychological Bulletin Dec. '01, Rind robustly defended his study against critics.) A 1989 review in the Journal of Sex Education and Therapy observed that, in non-clinical samples, pre-pubertal sex with an adult was looked back on with pleasure far more often than with pain. In 1995, a Canadian university professor defended intergenerational sex amidst a media firestorm. In 1998, actor Jeremy Irons denounced paedohysteria and admitted he had become rather 'obsessed' with teenage actress Dominique Swain when he played opposite her in the new film of 'Lolita'. A star 'victim' was Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth I of England): in 1548, at age 14, she was subjected to bedchamber hanky-panky and marriage proposals from England's Lord Admiral, Thomas Seymour, aged 40. Elizabeth seems to have responded warmly to Seymour's attentions and went on to be England's most successful Queen, deploying her considerable sexuality to effect (she was Anne Boleyn's daughter). If she remained childless, this was perhaps because she inherited a fertility problem from her father, Henry VIII; or because her first lover, Seymour, was soon beheaded when his brother discovered his bare-legged early-morning assignations and marriage plans. The Child Sex Abuse industry is a costly way of fanatical therapists pursuing unproven 'recovered memories' while actually making their patients worse rather than better. In one study, before the emergence of patients' 'memories', only one woman (3%) had engaged in self-mutilation; afterwards, eight (27%) had mutilated themselves (E. F. Loftus, 1997, 'Repressed memory accusations: Devastated families and devastated patients', Applied Cognitive Psychology 11, 25-30.).  As with experiences like losing a parent -- which also do little harm on average -- there may be initial distress or lasting harm in some individual cases of exposure to paedophilic advances; but such cases are evidently balanced by those in which the growing child actually draws psychological benefit and strength from the strange but affectionate experience. What matters far more to personal development than 'stress' is a child's way of handling new experiences, today appreciated to be influenced by birth order (with later-borns being more peer-oriented and less trusting of authority -- F. J. Sulloway, 1996, Born to Rebel, Little Brown). Sadly, the media have since 1990 or so confused paedophilia with the paedosadism practised not by scholarly, introverted clergymen but by infantile, low-IQ psychopaths who were hospitalized in the past but who today have to live 'in the community' watching pornographic videos until some opportunity for an arrest presents itself to police. The distinction was spelled out by Professor David Canter in Times Higher 5 ii '99, 'Crimes against humanity' -- see McDougall NewsLetter 23 ii '99; by Pritchard and Bagley in Child Abuse and Neglect 24 (where abusers with a history of violent crime were younger, more sexually aggressive, more likely to have committed sex offences with adults and less likely to have been abused by their own fathers); and by Professor A. Prentky in the New York Times 27 viii '02 (where only 8% of child molesters were said to be sadistic). In professional UK use, paedophilia (from the Greek pais = lad [not child]) always referred to a sexual/romantic interest in youths around the time of puberty; more lately, because of paedophilia being used in the press synonymously with child abuse, some workers have coined the term ephebophilia to refer to attraction to post-pubertal adolescents. After mobs attacked supposed paedophiles in England, a Daily Telegraph editorial said such a distinction should indeed be made (5 August 2000). On the death of the top British psychiatrist, Anthony Storr, the Times (21 March 2001) recalled his suggestion (in his 1964 book, Sexual Deviation, Penguin) that "the suffering of children who had been sexually abused "is more the result of adult horror than of anything intrinsically dreadful in the sexual contact itself."" The 2001 Journal of Psychology (135, 1, 17-36) carried a 'Meta-analysis of published research on the effects of child sexual abuse (CSA)' allowing an estimate that 86% of children who experience sexual abuse suffer no detectable long-term psychological distress as a result (see CRB's April 2001 news, below). In May 2001, after an exceptionally lengthy review process, American Psychologist rejected an article mildly critical of the American Psychological Association (APA) for bowing to political pressure and distancing itself from its Psychol.Bull. '98 findings about paedophilia. Written by an Emory University professor, Scott Lilienfeld, the article had first been accepted by four reviewers but had then been sent out for unprecedented extra review by a further five reviewers. Lilienfeld subsequently resigned from the APA and his considerable responsibilities in the outfit, calling it "a fundamentally diseased organization." Massive suppression, by whatever contrivance, is now the favoured technique of social-environmentalistic theorists when faced with the falsity of their views, so the censorship was accordingly covered in Science ('Psychologists cry foul', 1 June 2001, p. 1643). The APA finally caved in and agreed to publication after all – in a 'special edition' of Amer. Psychol. along with critical commentaries (Los Angeles Times, 6 June 2001). (The APA's excuse was that its 'editorial confidentiality pact' had been thoroughly breached.) In September 2001, an American team gave reasons to doubt that hysterical phenomena are traceable to trauma (Merckelbach, H., & Muris, P. (2001), 'The causal link between self-reported trauma and dissociation: A critical review.' Behaviour Research and Therapy 39, 245-254.). The authors wrote: "….simple models in which trauma directly causes dissociation are unlikely to be true." (The importance of distinguishing between paedophilia (typically involving consenting post-pubertal adolescents) and paedosadism (typically involving much younger children) was mentioned in the Times (29 xi 01, P-P Hartnett, author of the novel Sixteen).) The idea that child sex abuse is transmitted in cycles – with childhood victims going on to become perpetrators – was largely scotched by a team from London's Tavistock Clinic (reporting in Brit. J. Psychiatry 2001). Paedophilia is popularly practised in Afghanistan, where Kandahar is said to be the gay capital of central Asia. The Afghani preference is for sodomizing boys of 15-16 who, after overtures involving gifts, become attached to a married man and raise his status in the community (Times, 11 i 02). The practise was aggressively suppressed by the fanatics of the Taliban but returned with the Allies' military success. According to one author, the 1990's spate of accusations against 'paedophile priests' was attributable to anti-Catholics, greedy lawyers, sensationalist newspapers, self-promoting prosecutors and feminists with their "theology of abuse" (Philip Jenkins, 2002, Intimate Enemies, New York : Aldine de Gruyter). Researchers at King's College London found that child abuse only led to later violence in children having on their X chormosomes a relatively inactive version of a gene manufacturing the monoaminoxidase (MAO) which is necessary to break down brain chemicals linked to aggression: whereas only 12% of children had the combination of low-active version (MAOA) and child abuse, that combination was found in 44% of children who went on to careers of violence (Times 3 viii 02). The MAOA  gene  may explain why men are more  prone  to  violence  and aggression than are women: by chance, a woman will usually have a low-activity gene on one of her two X chromosomes compensated by a high-activity version on her other X.
    *  Survivors of major disasters are as likely to say their lives changed for the better as to say their psychological health got worse (Times, 17 iii, report to British Psychological Society annual conference).

  4. As was explained in THE g FACTOR in 1996, what matters for mental development in early life -- apart from genes -- is breast feeding. This is not an artefact arising because, in recent years, mothers who have breast-fed have been chiefly middle-class; nor does the effect arise from complicated mother-infant interactions at the breast [an idea beloved of Edinburgh University's commissars of developmental psychology]. Rather, the link occurs because breast milk contains fatty acids that assist the myelination of nerves, improving electrical conduction. Fatty-acid supplementation of commercial infant formula has now been shown to raise infant developmental quotient by 6-7 points (Developmental Medicine and Child Neurology, Feb. 2000; summarized in McDougall NewsLetter 14 iii '00). In April 2000, a British scheme was announced for paying underclass mothers UK£10 weekly to encourage breast-feeding. In August 2001, the BBC reported that six months' breastfeeding produced higher-IQ babies than did three months' breastfeeding. In 2002, a Dundee University team announced IQ boosting in six year-olds who had been fed a specially enriched formula for the first four months of life: the enriched formula contained the long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids that are found in human breast milk. Norwegian scientists also reported that duration of breastfeeding correlated with later cognitive abilities (even when controlling for maternal SES, education and smoking). Evidence from Norway and Sweden showed breastfed children to have an 11-IQ-point advantage by age five. Choline (found in breast milk and eggs) was found to boost brain grown in rats (Science Blog, 12 iii 2004.)

  5. What matters for education is that teaching should be geared to the abilities, needs and attainment levels of individual children. New evidence -- adding to that of Chapter 4 of The g Factor 1996/2001, -- has emerged favouring 'tracking' and 'streaming' in school (Intellectual Talent, John Hopkins University Press; 'Fast track learning comes of age', Personality & Individual Differences 24, 6, 899-900). {Summarized in McDougall NewsLetter 4 viii '98, SCHOOL 'TRACKING' IS A SUCCESS -- Blacks, Hispanics and girls benefit especially from being educated in classes where children have similar levels of mental ability.} In England, parents have voted 2-1 to retain selective education (McDougall NewsLetter 14 iii '00); and, in a major rebuff to 'comprehensive school' ideology, the Labour Government has said it will establish City Academies which will be allowed to practise selection and streaming (McDougall NewsLetter 21 iii '00). Even the left-leaning website for educational sociology, http://sociology.wadsworth.com/andersen_diverse/resources/SG/ch15.html, admits: "Most researchers and educators who have studied tracking agree that not all students should be mixed together in the same classes." In 2001, Labour announced it would support separate 'academic' and 'vocational' tracks for pupils in state schools from age 14 (Times 31 Jan., p. 1) – though it should be noted that, faced with hostility from tenured educationists, Labour has been very slow to deliver the proposals for differentiation first advanced by Mr Tony Blair in 1996. In May 2001, senior British educationalists found major flaws in government figures which had appeared to favour comprehensive schools (Daily Telegraph, 21 v, 'Anti-grammar school data wrong'): though able pupils are typically served poorly by British state schools (by 'value added' criteria), grammar schools do a significantly better job than do comprehensives. In Scientific American November 2001, the Cornell University economist, Ronald Gehrenburg admitted: "Hundreds of studies have examined whether small classes really do improve academic performance, but almost all of them have been inconclusive." In February 2002, 'New Labour' in England recommitted itself to 'fast track learning'. (Empirical support for tracking can also be found in: SCOTT, R., 1984, Achievement Profiles of Gifted and Talented Students in Secondary Schools, Washington, DC : U.S. Department of Education; SCOTT, R., 1993, 'Untracking advocates make incredible claims', Educational Leadership 51, 79-81.) American research demonstrated the overall success of school voucher programmes in Milwaukee and Cleveland. According to the Times 27 xi 02: "Tony Blair condemned the "enormous damage" done by the pursuit of the comprehensive ideal and said that he was determined to provide choice and diversity in education. The Prime Minister passionately defended specialist schools" {which can select many of their children by interests and ability}.

  6. Black Africans have strikingly low average IQs of 84 even when at 'anti-racist' universities in Black-run South Africa: J. Philippe Rushton & Mervyn Skuy (2000), 'Performance on Raven's Matrices by African and White university students in South Africa', Intelligence 28, 4, 251-265. {See also McDougall NewsLetter 16 ii '99. For background, see Richard Lynn's 'Race Differences in Intelligence: a Global Perspective.'} Rushton & Skuy note: "Black South African students are a highly selected population. They have passed standardized school matriculation exams, entered university and been chosen for a first-year course in Psychology on the basis of academic performance. Assuming that these students are one standard deviation {15 IQ points} above the population mean, the results are in accord with earlier work finding that Africans, in general, average a tested IQ of 70." An estimate in the low 70's also emerges from the scores of studies reported by R. Lynn and T. Vanhanen, 2002, IQ and the Wealth of Nations – see 2002 review by Brand. The average Black American does better (IQ 85) thanks to carrying a 25% White genetic admixture and enjoying far better nutrition, health care and education than is available in Africa (after some 40 years of Black control in many countries). Nevertheless, Black schoolchildren, whatever their gifts in rhythm, jumping, boxing and social skills, cannot be expected to perform as well academically as White children; and educational schemes should not be dumbed down just because Black pupils tend to perform poorly. Under-educating higher-IQ pupils does no service to Blacks or to anyone else. The New Zealand political scientist James Flynn speculates that Blacks might one day enjoy the kind of IQ rise that occurred in many White groups rather mysteriously in the twentieth century; but he has yet to demonstrate any of his 'magic multipliers' at work, and the worldwide secular rise in IQ test scores was not mainly on the more g-loaded tests (except on those which placed a premium on speed rather than accuracy). While Flynn hopes for a Black IQ boost, Harvard University has grown impatient and just wants affirmative neo-racism or, failing that, massive 'reparations' for the ancient slavery that brought Blacks to the USA. Even though slavery continues -- even enslavement of hundreds of thousands of children in West Africa – the 'liberal'/left demands reparations from Whites Only. In discussion with a 'social constructivist' (who argues there are no pure races {who ever said there were?} and that slave-trading Europeans created any African inferiorities {though the latter were first noted earlier by Muslim scholars in the fourteenth century}), Phil Rushton has set out today's case for race realism in the widely read magazine, Insight (Washington DC). Also from New Zealand, criminologist Greg Newbold says Polynesian rates of violence are four or five times higher than those among Whites, which is why Kiwis think Auckland a dangerous place to live. Orientals often accuse each other of massive genocidal political violence (as under Emperor Hirohito, Chiang Kai-shek and Mao Tse Tung); and the religious hostilities of the Indian sub-continent (flashpoint: Kashmir) often look likely to furnish the beginning of World War III. A study of men in Andrah Pradesh, India, found that men of higher caste (e.g. the priestly Brahmin caste – often considered the most intelligent) were more similar in their DNA to Europeans ('The genetics of caste', Science, 1 June '01, p. 1643, reporting work by Michael Bamshad at the University of Utah). (In 1997, the Times and Nature reported that the Cohens, the original Jewish priesthood, had been shown to possess distinctive genetic characteristics dating back more than 3,000 years.) As to causation, Pittsburgh physiologists have reported that cognitive impairments are associated with a gene e4 (Am J Med Genet 2000 Dec 4;96(6):707-11); and this gene is at least three times as common in Africans, Pygmies and Bushmen as in East Asians, with Whites falling in between. Top US sociologist Christopher Jencks does not attribute poor Black scoring to any cultural unfairness in the tests – a matter that was extensively investigated in the 1980s; and there is little possibility of accounting for most the B-W difference in the USA in terms of environmental factors – see review by Brand, 2003, Heredity. (Jencks is perhaps the most scholarly and scientific ‘environmentalist’ about the B-W difference. A full and accessible internet answer to him was provided in 2001 by Jos Verhulst.) The Fall 2001 issue of Mankind Quarterly reported a Black IQ of 71 based on the testing of 10-year-old children in Sao Paolo, Brazil (Maria Fernandez, 'A Study of the Intelligence of Children in Brazil'). Other group scores (using Brazil's standard Census categories and the Standard Progressive Matrices test) were Asians [mainly Japanese] 99, Whites 95, and Browns 81. {NB:  The Matrices are often thought skewed to crediting spatial intelligence. It is not just Blacks but also Jews who perform  rather worse on Matrices than on other IQ tests.} In November 2001, the leader of the UCLA team which reported strong links between genes, IQ and frontal gray matter said it would be possible but "unethical" to extend their work to examine racial differences (New York Times, 5 xi 01). Other group differences in IQ are less well established but nevertheless conform to a sensible pattern, with Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and Singapore having the world's highest IQs (around IQ 105) and 16 Black countries occupying all the lowest positions (with IQ estimates of around 70) – see The Wealth of Nations by Lynn & Vanhanen, 2001 (and review by Phil Rushton). Wealth is not invariably a predictor of national IQ: six countries having IQs of 99-100 are Belgium, China, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Hungary and Poland; but IQ correlates around r=.70 with GNP, GDP and economic growth rates (both recently and over the past 180 years). {All testing – mainly of children aged 5-15 was by the non-verbal Raven's Progressive Matrices, normally thought to test spatial ability [k] as well as the g factor. Sampling was doubtless not sociologically ideal and the national estimates obtained could easily be wrong by some 5 IQ points. However the consistently good performance by East Asian countries and the poor performance of African countries looks a highly valid result.} Achievement testing in New York State in 2002 found large race differences that could not readily be attributed to the socio-economic backgrounds of children. Police are often alleged by professional anti-racists to engage prejudicially in 'racial profiling'; but when academics in New Jersey studied speeding objectively (having the race of speeding drivers estimated from photos by observers who did not know whether the drivers were speeding) they found that the Black arrest rate (23% of all arrests by police) was actually a little lower than then the objectively assessed Black incidence of speeding (25% of all cases) (Front Page Magazine, 27 iii 02). (Around 2000 it became fashionable among liberal-leftists to pretend 'there is no such thing as race', but DNA testing at Penn State University (by a team led by molecular anthropologist Mark D. Shriver) found that only 16% of US Blacks had any White ancestry and only 0.6% of Whites had any Black ancestry; and American patterns of housing and intermarriage looked set to keep things that way, for racial miscegenation occurs between Asians, Hispanics and Whites – not between Blacks and any of the other ethnic groups. Massive race differences in AIDS – see Occidental Quarterly, Spring 2002, Chart 6 -- continued to confirm Phil Rushton's claims that human groups tend to evolve towards either sexualisation or encephalisation.) The substantial relations between race, IQ and brain size were usefully summarized and updated by Phil Rushton in The Psychologist 37:2, 28-33 ('Race, brain size, and IQ'; Summer, 2002; published by the American Psychological Association's Division of General Psychology). Replying to the notion that "race is biologically meaningless" (editorial, New England Journal of Medicine, 2001), a strong defence of the use of racial classification in biology and medicine was given by geneticist Neil Risch and others in Genome Biology, vii 02 (reported in Nature, 26 vii 02, and explained to New York Times readers by Nicholas Wade, 30 vii 02). There are  five main  geographically  isolated  groups in Dr. Risch's account: sub-Saharan Africans; Caucasians, including people from Europe, the Indian subcontinent and the Middle East; Asians, including  people from  China, Japan, the Philippines and Siberia; Pacific Islanders; and Native Americans. (The same five-fold classification is also used by the US Census Bureau.) Dr. Bette  Phimister, editor  of Nature Genetics, said that "Risch's point that there is a high and useful degree of correlation between ethnicity/race and genetic  structure, is well taken, and one with which we agree." Risch concluded his review of race by saying: "Ignoring our differences, even if with the best of intentions, will ultimately lead to disservice of those who are in the minority." The idea that race is innately linked to head size was long denied by social anthropologists relying on work by Franz Boas (who claimed to find substantial brain size differences between earlier and later immigrants to the USA, reflecting improved nutrition); but for New York Times 8 x 02, science correspondent Nicholas Wade reported that Boas' work had been reanalyzed (showing no difference among migrants) and could no longer be taken as a refutation of scientific racism. Apparently skull measurements can yield accurate assignation of race in as many as 80% of cases. White social anthropologists may not believe Blacks innately different from Whites, but African 'coloureds' would be seriously shocked to hear this – Spectator 29 xi 02. Evidence for an IQ of 97 in elite Black engineering students at South Africa’s Witwatersrand University was said by authors to dovetail well with an estimate of 70 for the general sub-Saharan Black population (Rushton, Skuy & Fridjohn, Intelligence 30, 5 (2002)). The biological reality of race differences were helpfully outlined in the book Race, 2004, and more fully (indeed, academically) at John Gudrum’s website The Race FAQ.

  7. Women are inclined to deceitful promiscuity (Sarah Hrdy, Mother Nature, Chatto & Windus -- reviewed in Nature 11 Nov. '99; Times 23 Jan. '00, 'One in seven fathers 'not the real parent'', Lois Rogers, Medical Correspondent). {See McDougall NewsLetter 1 ii '00.} An important consequence of the discovery will be improved understanding of the one child in ten in Britain who grows up in a family where the man it is deceitfully taught to call 'Dad' is not actually its biological father. Financial and penal inducements to contraception for wanton and criminal females are proper ways to reduce current horrors for children and society. In the USA, a charity founded by Mrs Barbara Harris has been paying drug-addicted girls for successful use of contraception (see details, vote on the scheme at Global Ideas Bank and at Parenting [current approval rates c. 70%], or contact Mrs Harris at Luvbabies@aol.com). Judges in the USA are now offering contraception as an alternative to jail for female psychopaths (see Reuters 29 Feb. '00, 'Judge: Birth Control or Jail' -- copied in McDougall NewsLetter 7 iii '00). Most inadequate mothers have a low IQ (The Bell Curve, 1994); and, in the USA, some 70% are Black, drug-addicted or both. Wider use of adoption is also necessary: adoption has long been known to give children a 4-IQ-point boost (A. R. Jensen, 1972, Genetics and Education, Methuen) and the UK’s Labour government has supposedly embarked on a major effort to extend adoption for the UK’s 50,000 children who are currently institutionalized to spare them from grossly inadequate parenting (Sunday Times 23 April ’00). In Charles Murray’s 2003 review of the world’s top 4,000 achievers, Human Accomplishment, women made up only 2%. A high IQ is a hindrance to a woman’s marital prospects – though it helps those of a male (Financial Express, 8 i 2005).

  8. Top U.S. criminologists now have evidence that provision of cheap birth control in the 1970's had a eugenic effect in producing the lower crime rates of the 1990's (Chicago Tribune 8 viii '99; McDougall NewsLetter 10 viii '99; New York Times 20 Aug. '99). The advantages of eugenics are spelled out by Richard Lynn in his book Eugenics (Praeger, 2001). Simple embryo selection could allow a typical couple to increase the IQ of their offspring by 15 IQ points. Lynn argues that China will become the first state to make sustained and systematic use of genetic principles and will swiftly overtake the West economically and militarily unless the West reverses its present dysgenic policies – as first urged in the 1970's by Nobelist William Shockley.

  9. Financial and penal inducements to contraception for wanton and criminal females are proper ways to reduce current horrors for children and society. In the USA, a charity founded by Mrs Barbara Harris has been implementing Nobelist William Shockley's eugenic proposals by paying drug-addicted girls for successful use of contraception (see http://www.pathfinder.com/time/magazine/articles/0,3266,29475,00.html, or contact Mrs Harris at Luvbabies@aol.com). Judges in the USA are now offering contraception as an alternative to jail for female psychopaths (see Reuters 29 Feb. '00, 'Judge: Birth Control or Jail' -- copied in McDougall NewsLetter 7 March '00). Most inadequate mothers have a low IQ (The Bell Curve, 1994); and in the USA 50% are Black and drug-addicted.

  10. Positive eugenic options are now offered via the Internet -- allowing people to have babies by models, athletes or intellectuals if they wish (New York Times 23 x '99; McDougall NewsLetter 26 x '99). The 'new eugenics' has been accepted by a regular columnist for the London Times as liberating and useful (Ben MacIntyre, 11 iii '00; McDougall NewsLetter 14 iii '00). (Naturally, neoeugenics needs to be combined with social and legal arrangements to encourage loving, lasting and responsible families. Moves towards individuated, and thus stronger marriage contracts are necessary anyhow after the devastation to the traditional Western family unit caused in the past generation by feminism and welfarism. The cause of strengthening the family -- even encouraging a male breadwinner to stop around -- has been taken up by several British sociologists and by the star liberal columnist, Melanie Phillips (who 'crossed the floor' to the Sunday Times), e.g. 30 May '99.)

  11. Butch lesbians (unlike the more feminine 'lipstick lesbians') turned out in 2000 to be biologically masculinized, having relatively short index fingers (compared to the ring finger) along with their somewhat dominant personalities. According to Guardian 31 iii '00, this result had been predicted by Brand as far back as 1982.  Feminists remain divided between the soft-core believers in various versions of equality ('are equal and actually similar', or 'should have 50% of top jobs anyway') and the hard-core feminazie supremacists (whether power-dressing heterosexuals or sour lesbians), yet all can unite with each other (and with lazy husbands) to urge greater female participation in the up-market workforce. However, the under-representation of women in academic life occurs not only because many women prefer motherhood to careerism but because males range more widely in IQ and are more independent-minded, so fewer females are found among the highly intellectually gifted.  Other sex differences (e.g. in wide vs narrow patterns of attention) is set out in Michael Gurian' Boys and Girl's Learn Differently! – see review. Contrary to the widespread assumption that men ‘sexually harass’ women, Oxford University researcher Kate Fox (working with Desmond Morris) found that females often initiate flirtation by exposing their necks, stroking their hair and fluttering their eyelashes (Sunday Times, 16 iii 2003, Solved: flirting code that baffles the boys’).

  12. Brand had also annoyed feminists and others by supporting Freud's basic ideas about sex, repression and the Oedipus complex (C. R. Brand, 1993, Special Review of H. J. Eysenck's 'Decline and Fall of the Freudian Empire', Behaviour Research and Therapy 31, 1, 129-131). Serious experimental support for repression comes from: M. C. Anderson & C. Green, 2001, 'Suppressing unwanted memories by executive control', Nature 410, 15 iii, pp. 366-9. These Oregon University authors found that some 24% of verbal associations could be suppressed and wrote: "These findings....support a suppression mechanism that pushes unwanted memories out of awareness as posited by Freud." A full account of substantially better memory for important life events (less repression?) in high-neuroticism people is given at http://www.crispian.demon.co.uk/MohanNeurot.htm. A fine rebuttal of 'cognitive therapy' in favour of 'according to emotion, transfused with cognition, the central role it has in our lives' appears in Times Literary Supplement 27 iv 2001 (pp. 14-15, 'Mind over mood? – The paradoxical triumph of Beck's cognitive therapy', by Paul Crichton). Nevertheless, despite his payoff and vindication, Brand's academic career was ended thanks to PeeCee hysteria in Britain. Academics say nothing to the press about these topics. No wonder a writer in Times Higher Educational Supplement has asked "Is Michael Gazzaniga's prediction of the death of psychology beginning to come true?" (Keith Sutherland, executive editor of J. Consciousness Studies, 17 viii 2001). No wonder psychology is lampooned in the Guardian (13 iii 2001) and needs replacing with psychorealism. Today's universities employ few academics who hold right-of-centre, classically liberal or seriously nationalist views. Socialists currently abjure interference with the national economy. They call themselves 'New Labour' and the 'Third Way' (Neue Mitte in Germany). Yet as neosocialists -- officially demanding equal status for all, and 'advancement' of minorities -- they have an icy grip on the sorry world of state education. They will not allow intellectual or personality differences to be mentioned, nor allow tailoring of education to the different intellectual levels and needs of different students. If Black youths have higher crime rates than Whites and Asians -- as they do -- this is piously said to be due to 'institutional racism' in the police. Any academic who says there are deep-seated race or sex differences will be hounded out of his job. The universities have been converted into tabernacles of tyrannical hypocrisy through which all who seek state-subsidized higher education must pass to be indoctrinated with PeeCee. Brand's own political preferences -- for contracts of choice in education, marriage, social insurance and electoral constituency -- form the main strand of his McDougall NewsLetters. Brand thinks it dangerous that today's politicians ignore and indeed encourage suppression of the factual findings of psychology. Such denial must indicate that their idealistic thinking has gone astray. Such folly may lead to yet further illiberalism and unrealism as the multicultural ambitions of Western neosocialists come to grief (e.g. Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, Northern Ireland, Kosovo, Malaysia, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Israel) enraging their originators and supporters. Instead of this terrifying nonsense, Brand urges recognition of individuality and of the good sense of letting individuals make their own choices. He thinks the liberation that has thankfully arisen from the 20th-century triumph of capitalism should be extended to other areas of people's lives, even those where the state is bound to retain much initiative. It is eminently possible to extend choice in Western societies – not least, in immigration policy, billeting asylum seekers with those who call for their admission. Brand calls his 'Fourth Way' proposal neolibeREALISM (a position also adopted by the spirited American columnist Jerry Pournelle).

ABSTRACT of Brand, Constales & Kane (2003),
' Why ignore the g factor? -- Historical considerations.'

In Helmuth Nyborg (ed.), The Scientific Study of General Intelligence: A Tribute to Arthur R. Jensen. Oxford : Elsevier Science/Pergamon

Today's neglect of general intelligence (g) and IQ by psychologists, educationists and the media is the West's version of Lysenkoism. By 2000, denial of g became effectively the official science policy of the USA as Stephen Jay Gould, the author of The Mismeasure of Man -- and thus Arthur Jensen's main rival -- was elected President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Rooted in an egalitarian ideology that the West had managed to expel from the field of economic policy in the Reagan/Thatcher years, denial of g has typically been supported by wilful ignorance, wishful thinking and downright censoriousness.

Those who deplore g and its links to heredity, achievement and race often rehearse the multifactorial/componential ambitions of the nineteenth–century phrenologists that eventually appealed to American psychologists in the 1930's and subsequently. Alternatively, g-denial may deploy both ancient and modern arguments that nothing can be 'measured' in psychology. These two contradictory positions of IQ's more scholarly detractors are especially considered in this chapter, as is the less-often-remarked problem for the London School that so few Christian-era philosophers and psychologists -- prior to Herbert Spencer and Sir Francis Galton --  made much room in their systems for g.
Despite considerable tacit acceptance of Plato's stress on the centrality of reason in human psychology, Plato's elitism and eugenicism are feared for their supposedly authoritarian implications; thus his acknowledgment that people have different general mental potential is set aside. However, a hypothesis is advanced here, and supported empirically, which attributes neglect of g by intellectuals partly to their limited experience of real life – across the full IQ range. Data from 6,539 representative American subjects are searched to form groups having mean IQs 115 and 85 respectively, and it is found that the g factor accounts for almost twice as much mental ability variance among subjects in the lower-IQ group, in line with the account of intelligence given in Chapter 2 of The g Factor (Wiley DePublisher, 1996). Finally, it is suggested that Platonic realism actually enjoys distinguished support in modern philosophy and provides a basis for a new liberalism.

The g Factor: General Intelligence and Its Implications

New Scientist [London] wrote in an editorial (May, 1996): "It is….a great pity that the book will not now be speedily published, for it is probably the best argued treatise from the general intelligence camp. For the many that will disagree violently with every step of its argument, this is the book to stimulate a true scientific debate."

The up-market American-Jewish magazine Commentary referred to "[t]his provocative but worthy book" (CASSE, Daniel, 'IQ since The Bell Curve', August 1998, v106, n2, p33(7)).

The on-line bookstore, Amazon carries the following 'five-star' customer review (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0471960705/102-9505282-7150403):
Excellent overview of debate
Reviewer: A reader from Houston, Texas; February 28, 1999
This is simply an excellent book. It is well written, the general interest is high, and the prose sparkles like champagne. As a book on the subject of psychometrics, it is superb writing, and Brand manages to capture the crux of the debate in clear, crisp informative style. An interesting point of the book is his tackling of the more difficult issues of intelligence, like the types of heritablility, the evidence marshalled indicating differences in group IQ, and discussions of the evidence given regarding the arguments against IQ as it is now being studied. This book is a different format than The Bell Curve, as it uses less correlative data for social impact of IQ, but it hits on the overall issues in much more depth than The Bell Curve gave, and it is not a policy recommendation book. Overall, a very good book. Buy it to anger the folks who would see it panned and because of its merits.

The website of the French-Tunisian evolutionary psychologist Philippe Gouillou, http://www.douance.org, provides a summary of The g Factor and a very favourable review (first published October 2000). Gouillou writes about the author:

A book published in Germany in 2000 described and deplored the de-publication of The g Factor (Volkmar Weiss, Die IQ-Falle).

The Pittsburgh physicist and parapsychologist, Emeritus Professor Bob McConnell, has recounted (2000, Joyride to Infinity, Washington:Scott-Townsend) the "emotional firestorm" which resulted when Brand's views opposing conventional multidimensionalism, interactionism, constructivism and psychological nihilism were presented to a Berlin (Dahlem) conference on twins in 1992. Of The g Factor, McConnell writes:
"Your reviewer has examined the book carefully. It is a scholarly work. He found nothing in the book that should give offense to an educated person regardless of race. …[Brand] treats his adversaries with respect – even those whom, in his subsequently-published Internet McDougall Newsletter, he has humorously belittled. …Among the major players in today's psychometric scene, Brand is possible the strongest, and certainly the most vocal supporter of Jensen's point of view. Brand's experimental work on Inspection Time as a function of intelligence is fundamental and highly regarded. …Brand gives broader coverage than Jensen to several subjects, including the slight relation of Piagetian theory to the g factor, "tracking" (or, as the British call it, "streaming") in the classroom, and the politics behind the Flynn effect. Brand places greater emphasis on subtests and non-g-related factors than does Jensen. ….Implicit throughout Brand's book is an indictment of the psychological profession for its trivialization of psychology by both the neo-behaviorists and the cognitive theorists. ….[After depublication, the McDougall Newsletter] became the intellectual's tabloid, emphasizing the concupiscence, cupidity and stupidity rampant among the politically powerful and the intellectually pretentious. ….[Brand] is a man of vast erudition and obviously has good sources, ranging from Science to intimate associates of people in high places."

In 2000, the President of the e-mail group on Human Biodiversity, Steve Sailer, offered reflections on what is currently a virtual censorship of scholarly work on IQ and race: go to http://www.vdare.com/iq.htm. For a bland account from the American Psychological Association of the censorship, see

Gordon Coutts QC). Subsequently, faced with legal action, the University paid Brand £UK12,000 -- the maximum he could have been awarded by a British court for unfair dismissal. In 1999, he offered an essay prize of £1,000 to encourage students to read his censored book, THE g FACTOR. Meanwhile the LUniversity stumbles from crisis to crisis, as summarized in the following flyer – prepared in 1999 for distribution to all academics and students at E.LU., and occasionally updated.

TAKE A COURSE at the Looneyversity of Edinburgh!

(It needs your custom now it's not in the Premier League.)

Learn how Edinburgh LUniversity --  among the UK's top six universities -- came only 11th in the overall national assessment of universities by the Sunday Times (19 Sep. '99), behind the Universities of Warwick and Nottingham. In other rankings of its teaching and management quality, the Looneyversity has fallen to 39th=, putting it with the University of Aberystwyth (Daily Telegraph 19 Aug. '99, A-Level Supplement). In research funding, E.LU. showed only a 1% rise in funding from 1997 to 1999, whereas Cambridge University enjoyed a 20% increase (Daily Mail 20 Nov. '99). The LUniversity has twice as many students dropping out as do similarly elite universities which admit few working class kids (Times 3 xii '99).
Learn how 117 E.LU. students were punished for cheating (Scotsman 13 Aug. '99, p. 1) -- an event now known world-wide as the biggest British exam fraud ever discovered. Learn how outraged students are taking the LUniversity to court over the accusation and alleging gross incompetence (Classic FM Radio, 24 Aug. '99, 11:00); and how the 117 smeared students have set up a website where they hotly contest the charges (BBC Radio Scotland 24 Aug. '99, 22:00).
Read how a student submitted a hoax essay and was awarded a prized mark (2:1) by E.LU. staff (Times 14 x '99, Guardian 14 x '99). See how Britain's top 200 'blue chip' employers are giving up on the LUniversity's graduates (Times 16 Aug. '99). Learn how E.LU. inflated its own success for the Government's Dearing Commission. Learn how top staff styled themselves with improper qualifications. Hear how the Looneyversity sacked Chris Brand, a psychology lecturer for 26 years who mentioned non-Politically Correct facts about race, sex and IQ; yet, wilfully illiterate, E.LU.'s PR department publicly celebrates one-time anatomy professor Robert Knox who was actually Britain's top nineteenth-century scientific racist! Learn how the university
paid out £12,000 -- the maximum that could have been awarded by a UK court to Chris Brand for his unfair dismissal (Times 29 Nov. '99, p. 2; Evening News [Edinburgh] 12 Nov. '99). (Why cough up? To avoid public discussion of Brand's views, said the LUniversity!)
This is the university that hangs on to a £1million bequest from socialist Arthur Koestler (famed author of Darkness at Noon) but won't honour Koestler's name when feminazies and their neosocialist co-religionists allege 'serial rapism' against Koestler (an accusation emphatically rejected in
Times Literary Supplement 23 Apr. '99).
Hear how E.LU. today smears one of its own graduates – a top Brand supporter -- as having "harassed" a top E.LU. bureaucrat to death!
Hear how students want the Chancellor, Prince Philip, sacked for 'racism' (Student 24 xi '99); and how the Prince fails to investigate complaints put to him about the LUniversity, even letting his Private Secretary deny that the Prince is the Chairman of its General Council (McDougall NewsLetter 5 Oct. '99). Hear how an E.LU. honours graduate has been jailed for 19 years in Australia for setting fire to his girlfriend (Times 24 Dec. '99). Learn how E.LU. sent unsuspecting Jewish students to find accommodation with a Holocaust practitioner (Independent 20 Jan. '00; Scotsman 22 Jan. '00). Find why top Scots sociologist Tom Nairn denounced the LUniversity as "mismanaged…by bean counters" (Sunday Times 23 Jan. '00). Hear why three female students at E.LU. leaped to their deaths within fourteen months (Daily Telegraph 3 Feb. '00).
Just ask at Old College, South Bridge, Edinburgh for Principal Stewart Sutherland to explain it all! He should be capable: unlike his LUniversity, his annual salary is well up in the Premier League -- being, at £149,000, the second-highest for university Vice-Chancellors in the United Kingdom (Times Higher 27 Jan. '00), and called "obscene" by the Association of University Teachers (Student 2 Feb. '00).
Unfortunately, Sutherland's efforts have failed to impress Prince William who has rejected studying Fine Art at E.LU. and will instead pursue a four-years Honours course at the rival University of St Andrews (Daily Express 16 Aug. '00; Classic FM Radio 17 Aug. '00, 11:00). According to the Sunday Times (17 Sep. '00), Edinburgh has been
overtaken by St Andrews University in the academic league table which that newspaper draws up annually. When Prince William rejected Edinburgh in favour of St Andrews in August, Edinburgh's many leftist academics said 'Good riddance to bad rubbish.' They will not be at all so sanguine about slipping out of the UK's top ten universities in overall quality ratings (most of them from government sources) – not least because they know on the inside that they live under a censorious régime which forbids them to discuss the Brand affair in common rooms or e-mail.
Losing £3million annually, so facing a real possibility of bankruptcy over the next few years, Principal Dame Stewart Sutherland has announced he will be needing a £40million loan for 'restructuring' and that even then there may be course closures, staff redundancies and sales of buildings (Student 25 Oct. '00, 'Edinburgh Uni In Cash Crisis'). Alan Walker, the Honorary President of the Edinburgh Association of University Teachers said, "I consider this a crisis"; academics told Student they blamed financial mismanagement at the LUni's Old College HQ; and Student told its readers: "It's commendable to see the Principal acting to reduce the University's colossal debt. But, at the end of the day, there's only one person who's going to pay for his cuts. YOU." To cap it all, the LUni has lost its star student, petite pouting blue-eyed blonde bombshell Elize du Toit: the TV soap 'Hollyoaks' babe has 'interrupted' her History course at E.LU. to advance her acting career – starting with peeling off to reveal her generous orbs in the October edition of the lad mag Loaded. Her like will not be with E.LU. again.
In January 2001, E.LU. began off-loading staff and cutting student options by closing highly popular anatomy courses in its Science faculty. A.U.T president Alan Walker complained bitterly about the "bombshell" and said staff were being treated "appallingly" (Student 31 Jan. '01). In assessment of teaching by the Government-funded Quality Assurance Agency, Edinburgh came only 41st out of 99 universities -- below the Open University and the Universities of Bangor and Hull. This put it in the middle of the Second Division. The top seven QAA places were taken, sensibly enough, by Cambridge, York, London School of Economics, Oxford, Imperial College, School of Oriental and African Studies [London] and University College London. (From Daily Telegraph, 16 Aug. 01.) In the Sunday Times' University Guide for 2001 (16 Sep. '01),
Edinburgh slipped to position 15 among the UK's 123 universities – amazing since it came seventh for the percentage of middle- and upper-class students which it admits. This league table uses a wide range of published data related to teaching and research qualities, classes of degrees awarded, staff-student ratios and drop-out rates. It was headed as usual by Cambridge, Oxford, the London School of Economics, Imperial College, York and University College London. Edinburgh's rating for teaching was specially disastrous (41st); but even for research it only came 7th, barely ahead of the University of Lancaster. Principal Dame Stewart Sutherland of Houndwood [the new Lord's chosen title as 'people's peer' – actually appointed by Rev. Blair] told the Tatler that he was glad Prince William had preferred St Andrews University to E.LU. "because it would mean having to deal with additional problems posed by the media"; and he equally brazenly told Student (17 Oct. '01) that ratings of British universities were unfair to Scottish universities – Student obliged him by not carrying the news of the LUniversity's disastrous drop in Sunday Times rankings without there having been any change at all in the criteria used. On 19 October '01, scientists at the LUniversity of Edinburgh admitted to making a huge mistake – which was immediately broadcast widely. For the previous five years, biologists at the LUniversity's Institute of Animal Health had become increasingly worried that Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) had spread to sheep. However, on the when publication of their work was expected, the well-funded experts (led by one Prof. Pennington) admitted a blunder: all along they had been studying the brains of cows, not sheep. In November, senior Edinburgh LUniversity academics said that planning for the merger of E.LU. Faculties into 'Colleges' [of Arts, Science, and Social Studies] was well behind schedule and "a shambles" – probably to disguise the large number of administrative jobs that would be abolished as soon as Principal Lady Sutherland had left the stage. The LUniversity has had to promise 'restructuring' to the anonymous donor who is bankrolling its 12-million-pound debt, but morale among senior personnel is now at an all time low because no detailed plans have appeared for discussion. December brought the devastating news that E.LU. has slipped further down the Government's league table of 'research excellence' (Times Higher, 15 Dec. 01): from 13th in 1996, Edinburgh fell to 16= (with Bristol University), comprehensively superseded not only by Oxford, Cambridge, London and Manchester but also by Warwick, Cardiff, Essex and Southampton.
In Spring, 2002, the Guardian newspaper did not even include E.LU. in its top twenty for teaching quality (using 2001 assessments), putting it
23rd -- beneath the universities of Birmingham, Lancaster, Glasgow and Leeds; and E.LU.'s research rating was little better, 17th=. Analysis allowing for some universities submitting rather low percentages of their staff for inspection of their research found E.LU. 20th, behind Royal Holloway College, University of London. For Psychology teaching quality, E.LU. came 65th= (sic); and, out of 96 UK institutions awarding psychology degrees, E.LU. Psychology came 63rd= according to the Guardian's 'Value Added' estimate which compares final degree classes with students' initial academic qualifications. Even in the Guardian's research rating, E.LU. Psychology only came 17th . None of this was likely to impress the LUniversity's newly chosen Principal, Timothy O'Shea, who himself graduated in Experimental Psychology (at Sussex) and who would remember from his time as a computer science researcher in Edinburgh of the 1970's that Edinburgh Psychology was once second to none.}
In Autumn, 2002, the Sunday Times (15 ix) estimated Edinburgh's position as
16th – down one place from its 2001 ranking, and comprehensively overtaken by St Andrews, which came in as UK 6th – Edinburgh's pre-1997 position -- and as the Sunday Times' 'University of the Year.' For 'teaching quality', the LUniversity was 17th, and its Psychology Department was reckoned inferior to those of Dundee, Glasgow, St Andrews and Stirling. Such was the situation at Principal Dame Stewart's retirement – to enjoy a peerage because he had secured English cash to pay for the bills of Scotland's old folks' homes. (The Sunday Times secured its continued access to Scotland's top drinking club, the Speculative Society which meets in E.LU.'s Old College, with a ludicrous headline 'Scottish universities win top honours'. This referred to the high percentages of students at Saint Andrews (78%) and Edinburgh (76%) who achieve Firsts or Upper Seconds – only Cambridge, Oxford and Bristol have higher 'honours percentages.' But these honours percentages reflect chiefly the fact that these classically 'good universities' in nice cities can be very choosy about their intakes: Edinburgh has eight schoolchild applicants for each place. It is scandalous that Scottish people are never told frankly that E.LU. has in recent years dropped out of the UK's top ten and can now claim 'top honours' only by failing to meet the 'diversity' targets set by the Government's funding councils – expecting universities to take more students from low-class postcode areas.)
Edinburgh's fake 'top honours' position will not now last for long. On 1 October, 2002, the Independent (p. 1) carried the news that Edinburgh had decided to accept the NuLabour shilling and
'widen access' (i.e. dumb down). The process involves rejecting well-qualified applicants from leafy suburbia in favour of less well qualified candidates from 'poor postcode' areas. The Headmasters' Conference (speaking for fee-paying schools) expressed its fury at the resulting unfairness to applicants – which is also being practised at up-market-intake Bristol University and the London School of Economics in return for big government handouts. The injustice will soon be answered by parents who will remove their children from fee-paying schools and place them in state schools in the year before A-Levels are to be taken (doubtless pleading sudden impoverishment or somesuch).
In 2003, the new Principal, Timothy O'Shea, gave details of how dumbing down would be arranged (Times 19 ii). Applicants were to be given bonus points if neither of their parents ever attended a university, if they had any officially recognized handicap, and if they lived in Edinburgh. The universities sub-committee of the Headmasters and Headmistresses Conference promptly replied that, while supporting widening of access to meritorious students, it deplored admissions procedures showing a
"fundamental lack of objectivity" and "sidelining hard-earned grades." Affirmative classism was also condemned by a Sunday Times leader (23 ii, 'Universities choose failure') which said that "Bristol University and Edinburgh University are presiding over their own demise." (Bristol was found to have rejected a gifted Indian student, Rudi Singh, who had 5 A-grade A Levels and was an outstanding cricketer. Singh's mistake was to have attended the famous King Edward School, Birmingham (whose headmaster called him a "sensational" student) and to have parents who were rich and well-educated. Following rejection by Bristol, Singh was accepted by Cambridge University.) The Sunday Times front-paged Comrade O'Shea's plan; and ran an inside story 'And the last shall be first' in which "class war" between Edinburgh and parents was said to be underway, and several LUniversity of Edinburgh top-drawer female students said how upset they and their friends were at the LUniversity's attitude to them.
In March 2003, the LUniversity began complaining that it was being
seriously underfunded compared to its elite rivals Oxford and Cambridge (Times Higher, 28 iii, c. p. 4). Apparently grant allocations in England respect the fact that better universities need more money, but allocations from the Scottish Parliament make no such assumption. What a hoot! Apparently, too, the LUniversity has not taken on board the fact that over the last seven years of its wilful censoriousness, untruthfulness and cash-grabbing plans to dumb down, it has ceased to be in the UK elite – having fallen to 17th, behind its Scottish rival, the University of St. Andrews.
May 2003 might have brought the tiniest moment of consolation to the LUniversity of Edinburgh in that it came 14th in the Times’ assessment of overall UK quality. However, that ranking still placed the LUni behind Loughborough and was anyhow due principally to Edinburgh dishing out First and Upper Second Class degrees at a rate that placed its students as the 5th best in Britain. By contrast, the LUni’s position in research assessments was a pretty dismal 17th=, along with the University of Essex; and its rank for teaching quality was a terrible 27th – behind all the major Scottish universities (St Andrews 4th, Glasgow 10th, Stirling 13th and Aberdeen 20th). (For two hundred years, Edinburgh was among the top six universities in the UK, retaining that position in government figures till 1997.) Nor did the LUni do much good by way of putting its students into occupations where a degree was necessary: on this yardstick of quality, Edinburgh came only a disastrous 34th despite its superb student intake. Edinburgh’s overall ranking of 14th was achieved with the further help of getting credit for its high research income, 6th in the UK; but it will not hang on to these big bucks once its awful record of the past six years comes to be realized. Unsurprisingly for Britain’s most shockably peecee university, E.LU. achieved the highest rankings in the gruesome triad of Sociology, Social Work and Social Policy. Any other top marks? Yes, the LUni came top for Veterinary Medicine. What do the four subject areas have in common? Pretty plainly, E.LU. aims to thrive on compassion for dumb animals. E.LU.’s censorious Psychology Department did even worse than the LUni as a whole, ranking at only 25th in overall quality despite having students whose entry results (A Levels etc.) were exceeded only by those of students entering psychology in Oxford. Thus Edinburgh Psychology is now the weakest link in its new administrative/academic linkage at E.LU. with Linguistics (9th) and Philosophy (22nd).
In June, 2003, The LUniversity of Edinburgh sank to a new low in overall university ratings, just 18th= along with Southampton in a meta-analytic ‘Table of Tables’ compiled by the Daily Telegraph (25 vi, p.17). The ToT combined rankings from recent surveys conducted for the Daily Telegraph, the Financial Times, the Times, and the Sunday Times and further threw in rankings from a recent survey of  employers of graduates. September 2003 saw E.LU. still outside the top ten UK universities, 11th according to the Sunday Times; and in October the LUni’s students were beaten 115 points to 155 in University Challenge by students from the University of Warwick. October saw the LUniversity issue all its freshers with keyrings containing the slogan ‘Feeling Down?’ alongside phone numbers of various counselling services – a response to the continuingly high suicide rate at the university where telling the truth was a high-risk activity.

*  Note about the Edinburgh 117  The LUniversity has apparently violated elementary justice as it did in 1996, after Psychology Lecturer Chris Brand had written a book about race and IQ, THE g FACTOR. Faced in 1999 with 117 alleged cheats, E.LU. gave out punishments [no marks, reduced marks, mandatory resits] with little conspicuous attention to what the students could be proved to have done. -- Likewise, in 1996/7, the LUniversity could never say precisely why, or for what Chris Brand was being sacked. The LUniversity that gives way to hysterical 'anti-racists' and feminazies for the sake of a quiet life and cash-flow must now face the music: its management is hopeless; its academic leadership doesn't care primarily about truth; and it has sadly ceased to behave as a university. It has tried to treat its students as naughty children who can be given a group punishment (mild in some cases -- but who wants to be known as a cheat?). Likewise, in 1996, the LUniversity encouraged 'ooh-err' avoidance of THE g FACTOR. The LUniversity's own Information Office would not refer inquirers to the controversial book (of which the E.LU. Library had three copies).
The students should be treated as grown-ups -- and that's what the 'Edinburgh 117' are now saying. The University says students should not go to the sacked Brand for private tuition (Daily Record 2 Sep. '99, p. 16); but only Brand is likely to tell students the truth about IQ, race, sex and genes. In the six-and-a-half years since E.LU. fired him, Brand has been proved right about paedophilia typically doing little harm (Psychol. Bull. June '98), about Black Africans having low average IQs (even when at university in South Africa -- ISSID Conference, Vancouver July '99, to be published in Intelligence), about intelligence being under genetic control (Nature 2 Sep. '99, 'Genetic super-mouse') and about the deceitful promiscuity of women (Sarah Hrdy, Mother Nature, Chatto & Windus -- reviewed in Nature 11 Nov. '99; Sunday Times 23 Jan. '00, 'One in seven fathers 'not the real parent'', Lois Rogers, Medical Correspondent). Education Minister David Blunkett promised (Sunday Times 22 Aug. '99) to introduce in state schools the 'fast track learning' which Tony Blair and Chris Brand urged in 1996 -- though the latter was howled down for his trouble by 'anti-racist' mobs in Edinburgh. Tony Blair repeated the promise in a speech in September, 2000
In 1796, Edinburgh University -- which had refused a job to Scotland's top philosopher, David Hume -- co-operated in having one of its own students executed in the Grassmarket for heresy. Today, E.LU.'s management has again put the institution's reputation at risk.

October 2001 saw the launch, both in paper and on the Net, of a new journal dedicated to opposing the political correctness and multiculturalism that have overtaken much conservative and liberal thought in the West. Edited by Washington-based librarian Kevin Lamb, the magazine is called The Occidental Quarterly (TOQ) and is being published by William H. Regnery II (P.O. Box 695, Mount Airy, MD 21771). In his opening editorial, Kevin Lamb deplored the neglect of racial realities in today's politics and concluded: " In looking to the future, we seek: a renewal of nationalistic sentiments; a perspective forged by the lessons of history and refined by bold rather than blunt distinctions; a genuine respect of ethnic and cultural variation, which recognizes what Sir Francis Galton once identified as differences in racial character; an outlook that firmly appreciates the role of heredity in shaping human nature, and fully rejects cultural uniformity and biological equality. We seek a future in which national cultures and population gene pools flourish and reach advanced levels of bio-social enrichment well beyond their current potential in the absence of multicultural hegemonies; a future grounded upon traditional Western cultural values of liberty, limited constitutional self-governance and meritocratic achievement. We offer the journal before you as a forum for the examination of these and other similar ideas."
Psychologist Glayde Whitney was a co-founder of the project and other race-realistic psychologists, Richard Lynn and Kevin Macdonald, are on the editorial board. The first issue was specially focussed on the British politician Enoch Powell -- articles by psychorealist Chris Brand (author of the banned book, 'THE 'g' FACTOR', and here advocating 'national liberalism'*) and 'Right Now!' editor Derek Turner. In 2001, UK Conservatives were told by their new 'right-wing' leader to distance themselves from 'Right Now!' so Turner's revenge was swift -- he called his article 'The English Patient' and dwelt especially on the sorry multiculturalism of British Conservative leaders since Mrs Thatcher.
The journal is described as A Journal of Western Thought and Opinion. It is the journal of The Charles Martel Society. Charles Martel (688-741AD) was the grandfather of Charlemagne and earned his nickname 'The Hammer' by his defeat of the Moors in desperate battles (e. g. Tours in 732) which began the eventual reverse of the Arab invasion of Western Europe.

* Brand's 'national liberalism' involves defending Britain's way of life and liberties, for example via:
neofamilies (versus low-IQ single parenting, Christian-only type of marriage, and state welfarism);
Kiddies' Lib (allowing adolescents choice of school stream, practical education and on-the-job learning, sexual partners and recreational drugs – if sanctioned by their neofamilies; votes at [mental] age 14)
mandatory choice (obliging the state always to offer choice in its ministrations – e.g. in health insurance and in local community differences – allowing exclusion of unwanted outsiders)
monoculturalism (insisting that immigrants speak English to a reasonable standard, and to a high standard if holding public office, versus conventional multiculturalism; no automatic right to bring in spouses and relatives)
statutes of limitations (no more trials of ancient crimes, no reparations for slavery, no return of the Elgin marbles and Benin bronzes)
advance delinquency insurance (parents to take out insurance against criminal justice system costs of their children, perhaps joining group insurance schemes supported by churches or similar neighbourhood bodies that would offer supervision of at-risk children)
monopoly control (ending the left-wing domination of the universities and local government; providing exam boards among which universities would choose where to have students examined)
PeeCee-free universities (universities not to receive state funding while employing staff who claim that there are no realities which science can investigate, no human cultures which are superior to any others, and no reasons for tolerating racist speech on campus)
pro-Americanism (hoping for NAFTA membership but accepting being in the E.U. if Washington prefers this)
neo-imperialism (obliging all Commonwealth countries, allies and neutrals to control their population growth, accepting no 'asylum seekers' from over-expanding countries unless they accept five-year conscription into an new model humanitarian Army for Africa that will oust dictators like Robert Mugabe).

Edinburgh's Evening News says I have "many" supporters in the city's University. So far, however, these possible comrades in arms have all kept their heads well down for fear of the character assassination that was inflicted on me by a combination of feminazie academics and the Edinburgh University Chaplaincy. Edinburgh University maintains a ban on any discussion of the Brand affair by its academics, yet this travesty of academic life goes unremarked by the media. (E. LU. sweetens the Scottish press and the rest of the Edinburgh establishment by means of an elite late-night drinking club which it runs – called The Speculative Society. The LUniversity does not invite discussion by even senior staff of its low position (15th) in Sunday Times rankings.)
From Tunis, I am advised that The g Factor is probably illegal in France – where punishable 'race hate' material now includes publications which merely make factual claims to the effect there exist races and race differences. In Britain, both major parties have indicated their willingness to move in an authoritarian direction – the Conservative Shadow Home Secretary announcing a plan to stiffen penalties against cannabis use, and Labour introducing legislation to allow e-mail snooping without a court warrant. Faced with such horrors -- culminating soon no doubt in penalization of 'racism' based on nothing more than the contents of a person's computer -- I can only recommend that McDNL supporters join the Liberal Party* en masse and change that party from within so that its historic and noble quest for liberty comes more into line with the neolibeREALISM of the McDougall NewsLetter.

*  The hero of the present Liberal Democrat leader, Charles Kennedy, is Lord Roy Jenkins, the former UK Chancellor of the Exchequer whose break with Labour did so much to ensure the Thatcher governments of the 1980's. Chainsmoking Charlie is the only party leader to give much priority to mentioning that he supports free speech, and the Liberal Party has a long tradition of sympathy for paedophiles and perhaps other pariahs. The Liberals are best-placed to act firmly against PeeCee and Multiculturalism if they only chose to do so, and they have quite often been accused of 'racist' electioneering. The party retains its visceral antipathy to trade unionism and has provided a lively critique of the endless testing of children to which state education has been reduced by both Conservatives and Labour. Given the unlikelihood of a Conservative revival, the most obvious way for Britons to constrain NuLabour's statism, punitiveness and illiberalism for the next five years is to turn the Liberal Democrats into an effective Opposition.
Unfortunately, the present Liberal Party's top brass profess themselves especially agitated by "
racist and homophobic hate crimes" by Whites; its Shadow Home Secretary recently went out of his way to denounce John Townend and William Hague for inflaming racial sensitivities; and its female candidates – like those of other parties -- present pictures of scarcely relieved ugliness, antiquity and obesity. Even Charlie Kennedy causes problems for some longstanding Liberals, since, as a Catholic, he can have no truck with abortion, contraception or voluntary euthanasia; and the party's Education spokesperson is the grammar school-bashing Shirley Williams. Thus the Liberal Party has some way to go before it can become the kind of innovative National Liberal Party that Joseph Chamberlain led in alliance with Conservatives around 1900. Fine denunciations of its lamentable recent support for NuLabour is provided by Times columnists Michael Gove and Matthew Parris.

The tide of PeeCee might just possibly be on the turn. In the USA in 2000, the revelation that Harvard LUniversity had pulled out at the last moment from publishing a book that was pro-marriage and failed to denounce all men as rapists was greeted with open hilarity by the Wall Street Journal (18 x '00, 'What Harvard Finds Unfit to Print', http://interactive.wsj.com/edition/past/summaries/menu.html or http://interactive.wsj.com/articles/SB971827306722805146.htm); and a Canadian MP braved multiculchalunatic 'outrage' by asking for Christmas to be declared an official national holiday (Toronto Globe & Mail, 16 x '00). In Britain, the Prime Minister and Home Secretary took the trouble in October 2000 to say they deplored an 'antiracist' report, The Future of MultiEthnic Britain, which had wanted Britain re-named to help shake off its racist past (its "vice-chair", married to a Labour peer, even thought Prince Charles should be told to marry a Black woman); and, in December 2000, the Conservative leader made front-page headlines for several days by at last criticizing the 1999 McPherson Report which had led police in South-east London to go easy on fast-rising Black criminality so as to avoid cries of 'racism.' In April 2001, there was broadsheet and Conservative criticism of the government-funded Campaign for Racial Equality which had tried to bully MPs who would not sign up as 'anti-racist' yet which would not condemn the BBC supremo who had deplored the BBC's staff being "sickeningly White." In June 2001, the US Supreme Court let stand a ruling that had led Texas to end affirmative action at its public colleges and universities (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/aponline/20010625/aponline103524_000.htm). The 9/11 atrocity exposed the folly of failing to discriminate against undesirable visiting aliens and immigrants from terrorist-harbouring countries – though PeeCee will doubtless fight back by urging massive surveillance of everyone (especially White 'racists') rather than expressly searching for the needles that have got into the Western haystack.
Currently, beside my work for the Woodhill Foundation,  I am writing a chapter (with American and Belgian co-authors) for a Festschrift dedicated to the University of California (Berkeley) race-realist psychologist, Arthur Jensen, and reviews for the new US magazine, Occidental Quarterly. The chapter (invited by Pergamon Press, Oxford) will trace the history of Western ideas about intelligence and try to explain why so many philosophers and psychologists strangely neglected the g factor – with the spectacular exception of the mighty Plato who (to judge by his famous Symposium) had wide experience of late-night paedophilic drinking scenes.

Perhaps some senior British Conservative figure like the unreconstructed Thatcherite, Lord Norman Tebbitt, could break away and link up with the non-antiSemitic elements of the British National Party and with a tidy number of Liberals and trade unionists to form some kind of National Liberal* or CHOICE Party. Item Number One would be politely to deport all relatives, immediate workmates and co-domiciled associates of proven terrorists and advocates of terror and murder. Item Two would be to offer all state schoolkids some choice about which classes they attend -- including the choice to move up a year. That would end the left's grip on 'education' at a stroke. Item Three would be to lower the age of consent (at least to the 14 which already obtains in the US state of Hawaii) and further to decriminalize anything that was regularly being done by more than 10% of the population (notably using cannabis). Fourth, I suspect it is time to pick up the White man's burden and start administering the countries whose citizens are so desperate to get out to the West -- China could usefully supply the grunt manpower. Generally, everything would be done to offer people the option of not having to live their lives amidst multicultural mayhem or the prospect thereof, and to make for more choice in type of health insurance, type of marriage contract** etc. Such a package could generate a groundswell of enthusiasm among young people. The programme could be begun gently with such measures as expelling asylum seekers whose claims have failed,  requiring all state-employed professionals to speak and understand English to a high standard, and decriminalizing all non-penetrative sex involving over-12's of normal intelligence (i.e. of Mental Age 11 or higher). Eventually all race-related 'affirmative' legislation would be repealed and people allowed once more to discriminate if minded to do so, though the state would be obliged to give reasons for any bias that it showed and thus to be challenged (e.g. via Employment Tribunals). Other countries would be encouraged to build themselves similar states providing a legal framework for making enforceable contracts and choices.***

*  The National Liberal Foundation was formed in 1877 by Joseph Chamberlain to form caucuses and push forward radicalism. It closed in 1936 once British politics became largely polarized on left-right lines and new 'Liberals' ruled out co-operation with Conservatives. The most famous National Liberal Party was that of Germany under Bismarck – finally breaking with Bismarck when he would not transfer more power to Germany's parliament.

** At present, girls are encouraged to wait to find the perfect partner; but this doesn't happen – either they get pregnant as teenagers by most unsatisfactory partners or they end up on the shelf and still devoted to the feminist ideal of careers when their fertility already begins its decline around 27. Support for 'neotraditional marriage', for teenaged girls being encouraged to marry mature men, can be found at http://www.angelfire.com/ga3/marriageculture/age.html. The Communist Party of Great Britain bravely champions abolishing the age of consent altogether – though dealing firmly with timely complaints of harm or intimidation. Other forms of marriage should be possible too – as discussed under the heading 'neofamilies' in the McDougall Newsletters. Neofamilies of around a dozen adults in size would provide a modern equivalent of the 'extended' family for children and perhaps become used by states as the major way of arranging and dispensing education and health care.

“Women know what men have long forgotten. The ultimate economic and spiritual unit of any civilization is still the family.”
Claire Boothe LUCE (1903-1987).

*** Britain's eminent political theorist, Professor John Gray (London School of Economics), recently declared:
"States are weak or corroded in much of the Third World and parts of the former Soviet Union. In much of the world, there is nothing resembling an effective modern state. This has wide-ranging effects. It's no good recommending extensive economic development, or even large-scale humanitarian aid, if the very bases of state power are lacking. The aid will be stolen; the aid workers will be killed. ...It's no good expecting rapid economic development in the absence of secure property rights, contract law, and the basic rudiments of state security."

'Mazzini, Masaryk and Middle Israel'
Australia's ruling Liberal Party
Romania's National Liberal Party
Lebanon's National Liberal Party
Russia's National Liberal Democratic Party

Stalin famously accused Lenin of 'national liberalism' when Lenin opposed incorporating all the autonomous Soviet republics into Russia.

Migrationwatch UK is a newly established, independent, think tank which has no links to any political party. It is chaired by Sir Andrew Green, a former Ambassador to Saudi Arabia. Professor David Coleman, the Professor in Demography at Oxford University, is an Honorary Consultant. We are now in the process of establishing an Advisory Council. We appreciate the contribution that immigrants make to our society and we entirely accept that genuine refugees should be welcomed, but they comprise only about 10% of those who arrive in Britain each year. Our research indicates that, on current trends, we can now expect a net inflow of at least 2 million non EU citizens per decade.  It is noteworthy that the Home Secretary accepted our estimate when it was put to him by the Home Affairs Committee on 18 Sept 2002. We believe that immigration on such a scale is contrary to the interests of all sections of our community. We intend to monitor developments, conduct research, and provide the public with full and accurate facts placed in their proper context.  In due course, we will make recommendations for policy. We believe that many of the arguments adduced in favour of the current large-scale immigration are unsound either in fact or in economics, or both. We wish to ensure that they are thoroughly examined.

But take care when viewing! In May, a senior teacher at Marlborough School (pupil fees £16K p.a.) took a break to watch girlies on his laptop while his pupils were busy taking an examination (Times 21 v). Sadly for the pedagogue, his laptop had remained connected to an electronic display screen in the exam hall. Thus he was aroused from his delightful daydreams as a female examinee, seeing a well-shaven pussy magnified in glorious technicolour, ran screaming from the room to report him to the PeeCee authorities….

Enoch was right!
