Welcome to:
Chris Brand – Psychorealist

Psychorealism = believing that mentality can be measured and understood (if chiefly via its products) independently of our perception, language, social conventions, social structures etc. Psychorealism provides an alternative term to ‘psychology’ – a subject that has lost all coherence, partly through its practitioners’ cowardly neglect of the main measurable feature in human psychology, general intelligence (the g factor).

“Obviously, the most extreme Idealist is Wittgenstein – whom Iris Murdoch described as ‘The Devil’.”
– A. N. Wilson, Iris Murdoch, London : Hutchinson, 2003.

Welcome to the fight against Political Correctness*, Multiculturalism** and Feminazism
 – the war which modern 'conservatives' are too fearful to wage,
so it must be conducted by modern National Liberals.
***

* Political Correctness (PeeCee) insists that there is no meaningful behavioural or ability difference between men and women; that no meaningful distinction can be made between people on the grounds of race or cultural difference; that all conscious human behaviour is culturally determined; that  homosexuality is as normal a state as heterosexuality; that the physically and mentally handicapped are not handicapped but "differently abled"; and that any important genetic differences between people must certainly not be mentioned. PeeCee actually dates back to the Soviet Union of the 1920s (politicheskaya pravil'nost in Russian), and was the Communist extension of political control to education, psychiatry, ethics, and behaviour. PeeCee was then, as now, intended to boost ethnic minorities against the dominant Russian majority; but historian G. A. Hosking records that "the system actually exacerbated ethnic animosity instead of healing" and was replaced by demands for integration in 1932 (The Russian Problem, 2002).

** "The main tenet of multiculturalism — that there is no absolute standard for measuring the respective worth of any given culture — has been shattered by 9/11. It too will enter into American folklore, along with such other false knowledge from past ages as phrenology, séances, periodic enemas, and dream analysis. …. Let us hope perhaps that we can return to the honesty and realism of classical 19th-century Western liberalism…." – Victor Davis HANSON, 2002, US National Review, February.
“To a large extent, the harmony and happiness that multicultural, multiracial empires are supposed to experience derive from one or two factors: the unwillingness of one cultural-racial group to resist at all, or the ability of one such group simply to dominate all the others and impose peace among them.” – Sam FRANCIS, 2003, VDare, April 7.

*** Classic role models of National Liberalism:
Viscount Henry 'Firebrand' Palmerston (1784-1865; Prime Minister 1855-57, 1859-65; probably had the prettiest wife of all PM’s, and later many mistresses; though an Anglican who declined the Governorship of "the negroes" of Jamaica, he discovered Adam Smith while at Edinburgh University and always keenly backed free trade, Catholic emancipation, the abolition of slavery and many national independence movements against absolutist rulers; but he placed high store by law as well as liberty and deplored and blocked Gladstone’s idea of giving the vote to the mentally incapacitated.) He was "….simultaneously an aristocrat, a reformer, a free trader, an internationalist and a chauvinist" – H.C.G. MATTHEW (1988), 'The Liberal Age' in Oxford History of Britain. “This most magnificent of prime minister’s [achievements] included midwifing the birth of Italy, destroying the slave trade….and creating a constitutional monarchy in Belgium  that survives to this day.” – Andrew ROBERTS (2004), ‘Not the Queen’s darling’, Sunday Telegraph (Review), 9 v. For another review stressing Palmerston’s patriotism, pragmatism, liberalism, John Bull image and attractiveness to women, see T. G. OTTE (2004), ‘Devil’s son’,* Times Literary Supplement, 27 viii, pp. 6-7. *According to reactionary Germans of the 1850’s, ‘If the devil has a son / Surely it is Palmerston.’
Joseph Chamberlain
(1836-1914), the radical imperialist who was UK Liberal Unionist leader 1891-1906. "What Chamberlain sought was a dynamic policy to forestall the polarization of the classes." – Jonathan CLARKE, 1992, A Question of Leadership, Penguin.
David Lloyd-George (1863-1945), the radical, progressive and nationalist believed by the late Lord (Roy) JENKINS (2001, Churchill, Macmillan) to have been Britain's second-greatest twentieth-century prime minister (after Sir Winston Churchill, who himself served for several years with and under Lloyd-George).
Gustav Stresemann (1878-1929), the longest-serving Chancellor of Germany's Weimar Republic, standing for free trade, democracy and a judicious blend of nationalist and internationalist objectives, and only failing by his untimely death to become a German President who could have blocked the rise of Hitler – Jonathan WRIGHT, 2002, 'Weimar's greatest statesman', History Today, xi. Stresemann told his party, “I can see only that we must work with the left because parts of the right in Germany have gone mad.”
A modern example of national liberalism (or neo-liberalism) is the Czech President
Václav Klaus – Thatcherite and Eurosceptic. National liberalism was advocated in the 1990’s by American political scientist Michael Lind.

Britain had its own National Liberal Party from 1931  (when it helped Labour limit free trade to deal with the Depression) till 1960 (it had largely merged with the Conservative Party from 1947). Germany had a National Liberal Party from 1867 to 1918 – it advocated constitutionalism, a laissez-faire economic policy, secularization, and material progress and its chief hope being to restrict the autocratic tendencies of Bismarck.

“The behaviour of states towards immigration comes very close to what we believe to be the ‘national liberal’ attitude of most people. Migrants come in rather freely if they are wealthy and will pay tax, or are very talented and can be expected to contribute more than they consume. But all states now prevent the entry, if they can, of large numbers of poor immigrants: they would probably make the state’s own poor worse off, and if too numerous would not assimilate, and would be likely to create ethnic or communal problems.”
Ian M. D. LITTLE (Emeritus Fellow of Nuffield College, Oxford), 2002, Ethics, Economics and Politics: Principles of Public Policy, Oxford University Press.

TERMINATED, COMPENSATED, VINDICATED!
This is what happened to psychologist and race realist Chris Brand at Edinburgh University (Looneyversity).

Academics today are cowed by political correctness (PeeCee).
They won't discuss inheritance if doing so brings them up against multicultural or feminist (feminazie) dogma.
They won't read THE
g FACTOR. They won't even defend free speech.
Yet still, as Edinburgh's Evening News has put it, "the Brand plays on"
– with special thanks since 2000 to the Woodhill Foundation (USA) and its realistic humanism!

Brand's scholarly answer to the once-élite LUniversity of Edinburgh
(now down to 18th in UK ‘table of tables’, and down to 27th for its teaching quality):

“He who commits injustice is ever made more wretched than he who suffers it.” – PLATO

Nonsense of 2002-2004

"Democracy is being practised in Zimbabwe."

Jacob ZUMA, Vice-President of South Africa
(Reported in Times 15 iii 2002, after tyrannical and ruinous 'President' Mugabe declared himself re-elected)

"The idea that intelligence can be measured was first suggested about a century ago, but it proved hard to find tests that gave meaningful results."

Jonathan LEAKE & Mark LUDLOW, 2002, 'Computer kids raise IQ levels to record.' Sunday Times, 10 xi.

"Edinburgh University excels despite being underfunded"

LUniversity of Edinburgh Vice-Chancellor Timothy O'SHEA, in the year in which his university had slipped to 18th in UK league tables, 2002, Times Higher, 9 xi.

“Children simply need intensive bottom protection.”

Columnist Caitlin MORAN, justifying a Somerset primary school which forbade its 7-11-year girls to wear thongs, Times, 28 v 2003.

“[Africa] remains a deeply troubled continent. There is no reason why it should remain so.”

      Sunday Times leading article, 6 vii 2003. {Published more than a year after IQ & the Wealth of Nations had shown an average IQ near 70 in sub-Saharan Africa.}

“Most of us agree that the notion of ‘race’ is a human creation, with no basis in genetics or biology.”

Andrew HACKER ( Professor of Political Science, Queens College, New York), New York Review of Books, 14 viii 2003

“America may have 50,000 online cops [trying to entrap paedophiles], but there is little co-ordination. A lot of the time they are simply talking to each other and not catching anybody.”

Tony THOMPSON, 2003, ‘Net closes on paedophiles,’ Observer, 17 viii.

“The killers are loose again in the most traumatised country in the world. Of the 120,000 jailed for their part in the Rwandan genocide, a third were granted amnesty in May are are now living as neighbours with the people whose families they butchered barely nine years ago.  It is an experiment in reconciliation unlike anything ever tried before…. Such was the scale of the crime committed against the Tutsis [800,000 died in 100 days in 1994, and many women watched their offspring cut to pieces – arms, legs and necks – and were then raped by the murderers drenches in their children’s blood] that for [Rwandan Patriotic Front leader, Paul Kagame] to pardon 40,000 Hutu killers is generosity on an unimaginable scale. One factor helping Rwandans turn the other cheek is that religion does not divide them [i.e. the Tutsis and the Hutus]. Rwanda is the most overwhelmingly Christian country in Africa.”
John CARLIN, 2003, ‘New dawn in Rwanda as a nation forgives.’ Observer, 24 viii.
     { Lynn & Vanhanen, IQ and the Wealth of Nations, estimate that Rwandans have an average IQ of 70.}

“….although there is, alas, racism in the world, there is no such thing as race. This is not a paradox. Racism is an extreme form of xenophobia based chiefly on skin colour as the most easily reocognisable marker of difference. But as a biological concept, “race” is an empty one. ….The scientific evidence shows that such supposed “racial” characteristics” as skin colour and hair texture are merely superficial – the genes governing them can be switched on and off in an entire population in less than 10,000 years, making a “black” people “white”, and vice versa, depending on how much sunlight they habitually encounter. ….Not a few famous Britons were, in fact, “black” or of black ancestry, among them the patron saint, St George; Dr Johnson’s beloved valet Francis Barber; George III’s wife Queen Charlotte; the essayist Leigh Hunt; composer Samuel Coleridge Taylor; and Florence Nightingale’s reoubtable Crimean colleague, Mary Seacole.”

A. C. GRAYLING (‘philosopher’), 2003, Times 25 x (Weekend Review).

{In 1994, ‘anti-racist’ geneticist L. Luca Cavalli-Sforza and colleagues identified six main human population groups* and reported from their genetic data that "the greatest difference within the human species is between [sub-Saharan] Africans and non-Africans...."  (The History and Geography of Human Genes).

* (1) Northern Mongoloids, (2) Caucasoids, (3) South Asians and Pacific Islanders, (4) Negroids, (5) North and South Amerinds plus Eskimos, (6) Aboriginal Australians and Papuan New Guineans.}

Realism of 2003-2004

“There are very few examples of children who have been given lots of money and who have done well by it.”

David GILMOUR (guitarist for the pop group Pink Floyd, with a personal fortune of £75 million), reported in Times, 21 v 2003.

“{Zimbabwe’s Black leader, Robert Mugabe} is engaging in state-sponsored terror and famine that cannot be allowed. You people should be demanding that Mugabe step down.”

Popstar and aid-raiser Bob GELDOF, speaking to African leaders assembled in Ethiopia after they had failed to halt or even complain about seven years of increasing tyranny in Zimbabwe, reported in the Times, 28 v 2003.

“The level playing field was a nice idea. Handicapping your own side is not.”

Ruth Dudley EDWARDS (Irish historian, resident in England), deploring the British Establishment’s ceaseless pandering to the IRA, kindred minorities and Political Correctness, Daily Telegraph, 29 v 2003

“You cannot simultaneously have free immigration and a welfare state. I would like to see a world where you could have open immigration, but stop kidding yourselves!”

Milton FRIEDMAN, Nobel Prize-winning economist, 2003

“The Blair government seems to want to do everything it can to erode British national identity, for which there can be no more potent solvent than mass immigration. Rather than try to ascertain exactly what is going on, how much it is all costing, and what can be done to stop it, as a royal commission would have done, it pretends that nothing is wrong and denounces as a racist anyone who suggests otherwise.”

Angela ELLIS-JONES, 2003, Spectator, 21 vi

“The common criticism [of British state schools] is that the classes tend to be too large, which is true, but the real problem is the teaching style which ignores sound old-fashioned methods. Far too much teacher-time is wasted on a troublesome minority at the expense of the better-behaved majority; brighter children lose their will to work, either through peer pressure or because they are continually slowed by the pace of the weakest in the class.”

James DELINGPOLE, 2003, ‘To hell with The Guardian’s legions of liberal Lefties and their blind faith in state education.’ Sunday Telegraph, 13 vii.

“One unexpected consequence [of my retirement from university life] was a feeling of liberation. Ironically, the very institution that invented tenure to safeguard free speech has become a place of stultifying political correctness. Small wonder that a former U.S. secretary of education called universities “... islands of repression in a sea of freedom.””

Emeritus Professor Ian HUNTER (University of Western Ontario), 2003, National Post, 17 vii (http://www.nationalpost.com/commentary/story.html?id=E7D1E217-B327-4F29-BF55-60F91CA23D6C).

“….if the Government rejects health tests [for would-be immigrants], it will be showing that it cares more for the rights of immigrants than the rights of the public. It shouldn’t be surprised if the public ends up caring neither for the Government nor the immigrants.”

Anthony Browne, Environment Editor, Times, 5 viii 2003.

“Human rights groups estimate around four million have died [in Black-on-Black violence] in the Congo over the past five years. ….In Congo for the past 50 years, tales of cannibalism have been apocryphal. Today they are a norm.”
Sam KILEY, 2003, ‘Chaos and cannibalism under Congo’s bloody skies,’ Observer, 17 viii.

“My Iraqi contacts have been telling me to get out. They say anyone with a white face is now a target.”
Businessman Tom BLUDENELL-BRUCE, a London-based oil expert visiting Baghdad to assist the Iraqi state oil company, reported Daily Telegraph, 21 viii 2003.

“….today, the world has grown numb to the scale of African horror. In late colonial times, nine deaths in a British-run prison in Kenya could rock a government in Westminster. Today, a few tens of thousands reported massacred in Rwanda, or a vastly greater number proved to be dying of Aids, makes five column inches on an inside page.”
Tom STACEY, Spectator, 23 viii 2003.

Why I Am Not a Muslim is a sometimes brilliant, sometimes maddeningly repetitive broadside. In it, ‘Ibn Warraq’ [a pseudonym to protect the apostate] takes pains to distinguish religious Islam from ``Islamic civilization,'' which, he says, ``often reached magnificent heights despite [the Koran and the theologians] and not because of them.'' (While few fundamentalists would admit as much, freethinkers have been signal figures of Islamic civilization. Consider the well-known 11th-century Syrian-born poet Abu al-Ala al-Maarri, who wrote: ``The earth has people of two kinds:/The ones who think have no religion,/the others do and have no minds.'')
Warraq's book cuts against the ecumenical, feel-good vision of Islam as a ``religion of peace'' found everywhere from President Bush's speeches to popular books such as Karen Armstrong's ``Islam: A Short History.'' Indeed, anyone who's read Armstrong's book may think that she and Warraq are discussing two entirely different belief systems. Armstrong, for example, says that it's impossible to judge the prophet Muhammad's assassinations of his political enemies and wholesale slaughter of a Jewish tribe against our present-day mores. But if we cannot condemn his faults according to contemporary standards, Warraq argues, then neither can we hold him up as the wise and tolerant lawgiver whom contemporary moderates praise.
Warraq also contends that Islam's apologists are so eager to perpetuate the ``myth'' of a tolerant Islam that accorded liberty to its non-Muslim subjects that they concentrate almost exclusively on the relatively decent treatment of Christians and Jews, the so-called fellow People of the Book, while ignoring the harsher fate of Arab pagans, Zoroastrians, Hindus, and Buddhists. ``Are they not human?'' he asks.
While some evangelical Christians have embraced his work, Warraq has been critical of that faith as well. Still, Warraq says he much prefers Christianity's philosophy, which ``teaches God's love, a far cry from Islam's wrathful image of God.'' In Why I Am Not a Muslim, he adds that while ``most Christians'' have moved away from a ``literal interpretation of the Bible,'' Muslims have not. ``All Muslims–not just the group we have called fundamentalists–believe that the Koran is literally the word of God,'' delivered directly, word for word, to his prophet Muhammad, he says.

Lee SMITH, 2003, Boston Globe, 17 viii.
       {According to William McDougall, 1924, Ethics and Some Modern World Problems, Islamic tyranny and egalitarianism allowed a rapid expansion in its first few centuries; but then the religion went in to decline from failing to allow the setting-up of nation states (it was “lacking in conservative influence” and turned its conquered peoples into disloyal and non-self-sacrificing “cosmopolitans”) – and from interbreeding with Africans.}

“[For the moderate Muslim majority to speak out] is not enough. What the community must do is to inculcate a commitment, as British citizens, to the rule of law, the avoidance of violence, the principle of tolerance and the moral values of this country.”
Leading article, 2003, Times, 3 xii.

“Lumping young people of widely ranging ability in one group and expecting them all to achieve is haopeless, as has been proved over and over.”

Jenny HJUL, 2004, Sunday Times, 1 ii.

“The only way Africa can save itself is to be re-colonised, no ifs or buts about it.”

‘Taki’, 2004, Spectator, 14 ii.

News item – Headstart benefits in multicultural society…

"Police raided the premises of Headstart Education, in south-west London, after a tip-off from [an examination board]. They found pupils looking at a paper that was to have been taken by 300,000 candidates the following morning." – Times, 13 vi '02

{The papers had been stolen from a south London school where she worked for 13 years by Pakistani teacher Farzana Akbar,  46, who had been brought to Britain in 1962 and always dedicated herself to helping the Pakistani community. She was exposed by an honest student at her husband's privately-run crammer school who realised what had happened. – Daily Telegraph, 3 viii '02. She was finally jailed for three months.}

Corking Quotes of Yesteryear

“….if there be a Faith, from of old, it is this, as we often repeat, that no Lie can live for ever. The very Truth has to change its vesture, from time to time; and be born again. But all Lies have sentence of death written down against them, and Heaven`s Chancery itself; and, slowly or fast, advance incessantly towards their hour.”
Thomas CARLYLE, 1837, The French Revolution: A History, Book 1.

After the uprising of the 17th June
The Secretary of the Writers Union
Had leaflets distributed in the Stalinallee
Stating that the people
Had forfeited the confidence of the government
And could win it back only
By redoubled efforts. Would it not be easier
In that case for the government
To dissolve the people
And elect another?

Bertold BRECHT, 1953.

Yet, despite this well-known ironical verse, the governments of the West embarked on population change in the 1990’s – encouraging their women towards childless careers and admitting Mexicans, Caribbeans and Muslims for their liberal-left voting likelihood and cheap (especially when illegal) labour.

Know your enemy! --

Both humanists and the public hanker after rationality in the first, stronger sense of the term: a sense which is associated with objective truth, correspondence to reality, and method, and criteria. We should not try to satisfy this hankering, but rather try to eradicate it."

Richard RORTY, 1987, Science and Solidarity.

"A multicultural society is a contradiction in terms, dissolving society into competing fragments. It gives people nothing to identify with or hold in common with each other. It creates instead a grievance culture in which minorities present themselves as victims."

      Melanie PHILLIPS, 2001, Sunday Times 2 ix. {Melanie Phillips was long a regular columnist for the left-wing Observer newspaper.}

"The borders of Western countries are under siege and the West needs to consider incentives for would-be migrants to stay at home."

EDITORIAL, Sunday Times 2 ix 2001.

"....until we free ourselves of the constraints of multiculturalist dogma, and reaffirm the central importance of historic American culture and immigrant assimilation into that culture, we will face an immigrant situation that is not only a social problem, but also a national security risk."

Lance IZUMI (Senior Fellow in California Studies,  Pacific Research Institute),
VDARE.COM, 19 x 2001 (http://www.vdare.com/misc/izumi_assimilation.htm).

"[Home Secretary David Blunkett's] outburst [urging that immigrants learn English and renounce arranged marriages and genital mutilation] is quite useful. The pussyfooting fake reverence for immigrant "cultures" has done damage to British life."

Top Times columnist Libby PURVES, 11 xii 01

"A Sunday Times survey has found that four of ten British Muslims believe Osama bin Laden is justified in mounting his war against the USA. ….liberal Britain has got to get real and ditch the multiculturalism that is now a menace to life and liberty."

Melanie PHILLIPS, 2001, Sunday Times, 4 xi 01.

"{Because of deciding to pursue multiculturalism and 'diversity',} Britain became the capital of world Islamism during the 1990s."

(From the lead review in Times Literary Supplement, 27 vi 2002)

A RARE ADMISSSION OF MUSLIM ATTITUDES:
"Please don't kick the ambassador out of London for saying this, but if you go around the Muslim world, you will find the vast majority of people will support Osama bin Laden, and this is more tragic than the attack itself [i.e. 9/11]. Why would such a crime like this find such support, not just on the streeets of Riyadh, but on the streets of Turkey, the streets of Tunis, the streets of Britain?"

Ghazi ALGOSAIBI, 62, Saudi Ambassador to Britain. Talking to Boris Johnson, Spectator 7 ix 2002.

"A white racist is someone who believes that white civilization is superior to black civilization, and is happy about it. A black racist is someone who believes white civilization is superior to black civilization, and is furious about it."

Enoch was right!

Christopher Brand is the author of The g Factor. This 1996 book on general intelligence (g)* was favourably reviewed in the top science magazine Nature on 5 May, 1996; but by that time the book had already been withdrawn from UK bookshops by its publisher. Wiley & Sons (Chichester, UK) had been told by its head office in New York that Brand's politically incorrect claims about race differences were "repellent." Wiley's decision to withdraw the book gave the green light for 'anti-racists' in Scotland to demand that Brand endure an inquisition for his 'scientific racism' which would hopefully end in his being publicly humiliated and banned from teaching.

* See e.g. Scientific American's introduction to the g factor (the main factor in IQ-type tests).

Readily affirming hereditarian views on race, IQ, and sex differences, but repeatedly asking that his book be re-published and actually read by his critics, Brand was eventually fired by Edinburgh University in August 1997. His dismissal followed twenty-six years of unblemished academic service and one year of him being publicly denounced by his own University Principal as "obnoxious." Though he was cleared by senior Edinburgh academics of a raft of spurious charges -- of "unfairness" as a teacher and examiner, of lack of repute as a researcher, and of having done "damage" to the University -- a mere one page of e-mail which he had copied to the Edinburgh University Chaplain was judged to have been a sackable "disgrace."

The e-mail item had been just one page of The g Factor NewsLetter which was published every few days during 1996 to defend Brand's book and views and to denounce illiberalism of all kinds – as well as the modern censorship which Brand was himself experiencing. NewsLetters were sent regularly to the Chaplain, at that dominie's request, to help him 'counsel students upset by racism'; but in fact the Chaplain, the Rev. Iain Whyte, attended protest rallies mounted by the 'Anti-Nazi League.' The 16 October 1996 NewsLetter issue included a suggestion of clemency for an American Nobel Prize-winner facing 30 years in jail for non-violent and apparently inconsequential paedophilic indecency with a teenage boy, one of some 50 children he had legally and very helpfully adopted (mainly from Papua New Guinea). The extract was taken to Scotland's tabloid press three weeks later. (This gift to the tabloid occurred just when Oxford University Press had been persuaded to show interest in re-publishing The g Factor and the University Principal had written to the Scottish press to reposition himself, now saying he had no criticism of The g Factor for he had never read it.) A media firestorm promptly followed, leading to the University setting up a Tribunal and – after three months of evidence and deliberations – to Brand being dismissed.

--

Such was the revenge of the politically correct on race-realist Brand and The g Factor. The 'academic publisher' and the university principal [Sir Stewart Sutherland] who denounced Brand without ever reading his book effectively threw him to the mob which proved classically insatiable -- especially since only a half dozen academics ever came forward to defend even Brand's right to free speech. Even this display of ‘antiracism’ was not sufficient for history professor Tony Kushner, director of a Jewish history centre at Southampton University, who publicly urged more “punishment” of Brand. However, in a 1999 moral victory, Brand extracted £12,000 from Edinburgh University, equal to the maximum sum that could in those days be won from courts in the United Kingdom for unfair dismissal (Times [London] 29 Oct. '99, p. 2). Edinburgh University actually said it was paying out "to prevent the airing of Brand's opinions and views at public expense" (Times Higher 5 Nov. '99, p. 2) -- showing the modern disdain preferred by PeeCee to any open contest of ideas.

Brand has long been known to readers of Nature, Times Higher, Behaviour Research & Therapy, Personality & Individual Differences and European Journal of Personality. He is a Fellow of the Galton Institute and a supporter of the 'London School' of psychology – backing the main ideas of the famous British psychologists Sir Francis Galton, Charles Spearman, Sir Cyril Burt and Hans Eysenck. Researches by Brand and his students have indicated that g is not primarily 'knowledge.' Rather, g involves a fast speed of intake for even the simplest information about the world. (In trade terms, IQ correlates around -.50 with the exposure time [or 'inspection time'] needed for tachistoscopic recognition.)

Brand continues to hope that some publisher will daringly show an interest in his proposed biography of William McDougall FRS, the instinct psychologist who was professor of psychology at Harvard from 1920 to 1926 but was later ignored because he had opposed behaviourism, egalitarianism and social environmentalism.  Wiley DePublisher insists on retaining copyright on The g Factor (1996) unless and until Brand promises to stop criticizing Abominable Wiley's nauseating conduct, but a revised (2001) version is available free online at http://www.douance.org/qi/brandtgf.htm.

For the kind of wilfully ignorant criticism mounted by the UK 'Anti-Nazi League', see e.g. http://platon.ee.duth.gr/data/maillist-archives/cyberurbanity/1997/msg00138.html: this far-left group claimed "the work was withdrawn partly through political pressure, but also because of unsubstantiated claims contained within it which masqueraded as 'science', and the quality of the research upon which it was based." According to the neo-Stalinist magazine Challenge (24 Sep. 1997, http://www.plp.org/cd97/cd924.html )"Brand is part of an international academic network that includes Arthur Jensen, Charles Murray and Dinesh D’Souza in the U.S., J. Philippe Rushton in Canada, and Richard Lynn and H. J. Eysenck in the U.K. These reborn Nazis get big bucks from the Nazi Pioneer Fund and from New Money foundations such as the Bradley Foundation." (In fact, Brand – a psychology lecturer and personality theorist -- never requested or received any such funding.) For modern hysteria in the West about 'scientific racism', and how Brand came to break the taboo, go to http://ds.dial.pipex.com/hhe/ind97.htm. There, what happened to Brand is denounced as "a new, subtle form of censorship, where nobody desires to be called a "censor", but under which inconvenient people will simply not get their books published at all."

PRESS RELEASE ON BRAND'S DISMISSAL

--

In the seven years since his publisher let him down and Edinburgh University moved to fire him, psychologist Brand has been academically vindicated. There is fresh and strong support for all the main propositions which Brand championed.

  1. The g factor -- unitary, innate, linearly rankable intelligence, linked to basic information processes and having causal status -- is still entirely intact as a key psychological postulate. A whole issue of the international academic journal Intelligence (26, 3, 1998) was devoted to honouring Emeritus Professor Arthur Jensen, the Californian psychologist who became, after 1969, the leading scholar in the study of people's differences in general intelligence. London School theorizing about g was commended to the attention of a wider audience of US intellectuals by a young Harvard academic (Commentary, Aug. '98, 'IQ since The Bell Curve'). In mice, levels of something like g have proved to be alterable by genetic engineering (Nature 2 Sep. '99, 'Genetic super-mouse'). The Princeton creator of the learning-boosted mice is now working with Eureka Pharmaceuticals and writes, “it would not be totally surprising if enhancing learning and memory skills led to improved intelligence” (Scientific American Apr. 2000, ‘Building a brainier mouse’). The case that Chromosome 6 houses an "intelligence gene” is outlined in Matt Ridley’s Genome (2000, HarperCollins)  -- the original report of this allele, which adds 4 IQ points to possessors' intelligence, was by M. J. Chorley et al. (Psychol. Science 9, 1998). According to new Cambridge University and German research using PET scanning as 13 subjects solved a variety of IQ-type problems, a neural basis for general intelligence may be the prefrontal cortex (Science 21 vii 2000; New York Times 21 vii 2000, 'Study finds region of brain may be key problem solver'; http://washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A17618-2000Jul20.html). More electrical activity in the prefrontal cortex was found in higher-IQ testees as  they worked on an elementary cognitive task (Times, 17 iii 2003, p. 1). US scientists at NHS have found important DNA differences between high-IQ children and normal controls (http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/sci/tech/newsid_850000/850358.stm); and a hormone, beta catenin, has been found which contributes especially to the cortical growth in which homo sapiens is so distinguished. New data showing that the g factor is especially strong and important across the bottom half of the IQ range will be presented (by Brand, Constales and Kane – ABSTRACT below) in a forthcoming Festschrift for Arthur Jensen (H. Nyborg, ed.; Oxford, Pergamon, 2003). Psychologists from Madrid provided further evidence of ‘differentiation’ – of the g factor becoming less pronounced among higher-ability testees (Intelligence 30, 5, esp. pp. 458-9); and a West of Scotland study of 900 normal people of ages 15-55 showed that reaction time correlates with g only in the bottom half of the IQ range (Intelligence 31, 5, p.496). The g Factor, 1996/2001, sets out evidence that 'mental speed of intake', measured by Inspection Time (IT), is especially strongly related to IQ differences below IQ 100. A new basic processing measure, Frequency Accrual Speed Test (FAST), involves judging which of two lamps is flashing more frequently: even in undergraduates (having restricted IQ variance) FAST correlates strongly (r=.56) with nonverbal intelligence (Ettinger & Corr, 2001, European J. Personality (15, 2). The correlation between information processing speed and g is attributable almost entirely to genetic factors – Neubauer et al., 2001, Intelligence. Though some studies have linked IT equally to ‘visual speed’, an IQ-IT correlation of -.70 was reported in Intelligence in 2004 (in a rare study involving some non-students). IQ has a stability of .73 across the life span (age 11 – 77), determines many life-style and life-outcome variables (e.g. Brand, 1996, J. Biosocial Sci. 28, 387-404) and even has a correlation of .18 across 70 years with age-at-death which is not explicable in terms of parental occupation or degree of childhood overcrowding (Whalley & Deary, 2001, Brit. Med. J. 322, 7 iv). The 'multiple intelligence' claims of Robert Sternberg and Howard Gardner are much overstated – see e.g. 'Sternberg research team is mistaken: its data do not reveal an independent practical intelligence that rivals g.' Experimental psychologists continue to discover the g factor even though they prefer to call it 'working memory' (Miyake et al., 2001). In 2002, the decline of intelligence that occurs in Alzheimers disease was traced to the gene apolipoprotein E4 (APOE4) which is carried by 25% of people and creates nerve cell changes in the frontal cortex (Duke University Medical Center http://www.mc.duke.edu/). Wisconsin researchers reported that IT performance correlated .63 with fluid g in 40 college students having a mean fluid IQ of 106; correction for restriction of IQ range (only 86-123) made the true correlation .74, and the researchers concluded the IT-IQ link did not just arise from visuo-spatial abilities (David C. Osmon [neuropsy@uwm.edu] & Rebecca Jackson, 2002, Intelligence 30, 2, 119-127). Declines in IQ from age 11 to age 80 (even in people not suffering Alzheimer's Disease) has been linked to the apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotype (Deary et al., Nature, 29 viii 02); and a study of 3,263 Newcastle residents confirmed that (unlike vocabulary scores) “fluid mental ability sharply decline[s] from 49 to 92 years (Rabbitt et al., 2003, Brit. J. Psychol. 94). A gene has been found for microcephaly (small brain size, resulting in mental retardation) – reported in Nature Genetics. Progress in finding precise genes for IQ was reported by a Manchester University team including top cognitive psychologist P. M. A. Rabbitt in Molecular Psychiatry 8, 1, 14-18 (2003). Neuroscientists (including Harvard’s Christopher Chabris) using Advanced Progressive Matrices reported that brighter subjects show more brain activity in some areas (lateral prefrontal cortex, cerebellum and anterior cingulate cortex) when undertaking a parallel processing task requiring both memory updates and sustained attention (New York Times, 17 ii ‘03). Dr. Earl Miller, a professor of neuroscience at the Picower Center for Learning and Memory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said, "The idea that performance on a task that's supposed to tap into general intelligence can predict real differences in activity in the brain lends support for the idea that there is a general intelligence." (A similar task, paced serial addition, was first found to be strongly linked to g by Vincent Egan – see Brand, The g Factor, 1996.) In 2004, University of California researchers led by paediatrician Richard Haier found greater brain activation in grey matter at specific brain sites (especially in the frontal lobes) when subjects took IQ tests. A paper in the Journal of Neuroscience (L. D. Matzel et al., 2003) demonstrated the existence of the g factor in mice: the authors claimed that ‘‘across species and test batteries, converging evidence is emerging from which to infer the existence in laboratory animals of a general influence on cognitive abilities that transcends sensory, motor, and motivational demands, as well as neuroanatomical learning systems and ‘domains’ of abilities,’’ and they explicitly cited Jensen. Chicago biomedical researchers reported a gene, called ASPM, likely to be responsible for the evolutionary growth of the human brain (Discover Magazine, 4 iii 04). Copious evidence of g’s causal influence on literacy, educational level, job level and health (even across above-adequate levels of income) was reviewed by Linda Gottfredson (J.Person.&Soc.Psychol.86, 1, 174-199, 2004). From Adelaide, Burns & Nettelbeck reported no relation of IT to the g factor (Intelligence, 2003), but their subjects had a mean IQ of 124 and even Wechsler Perform Performance IQ did not related to g, so their work is most simply regarded as showing – like Brand, Constles & Kane -- that the g factor differentiates (breaks up) at high levels of IQ.

  2. The early social environments supplied for children by their parents are unimportant in causing lasting differences in personality or intellect -- except when the parents are cruel (John T. Bruer, 1999, The Myth of the First Three Years, New York:Free Press). Intelligence editor Douglas Detterman (who himself doubted the g factor in the 1980's) has deplored the "absurd environmentalism" of latter-day behaviourists such as Britain's late M. J. A. Howe (1998, Behavioral & Brain Sciences 21, 3, 411-2). For reviews of Bruer [all supportive, and referring to similar conclusions by David Rowe and Judith Rich Harris], see Science 8 Oct. '99, Nature 14 Oct. 1999, New Yorker 10 Jan. 2000 and New York Review of Books 9 Mar. 2000. {All the reviews were summarized in McDougall NewsLetters Winter 1999/2000.} In a USA sample of thousands of families, divorce had no detectable adverse psychological impact on 90% of children (Professor E. Mavis Hetherington – Observer 27 i 2002). A Norwegian team has lately confirmed 1969 estimates that birthweight predicts only 2% of variance in later IQ, thus invalidating many stories envisaging that poor nutrition and medical care cause low IQ (Archives of Disease in Childhood 2000; 83:25-30). A summary of modern psychogenetic results in Science showed heritabilities around 65% for psychological differences, and very little influence of shared family environment (P. McGuffin, B. Riley & R. Plomin (2001). 'Toward behavioral genomics.' Science 291, 1232-3, 16 ii). In a study of 558 twin pairs in London, musical ability turned out to be 80% heritable (Times 9 March 2001; http://news.bbc.co.uk/low/english/health/newsid_1209000/1209186.stm). David Rowe's Biology and Crime (Roxbury, 2000) exhibits similar realism about the importance of genetic factors in crime. In November 2001, a UCLA team reported in Nature Neuroscience (5 xi) that the amount of gray matter in the frontal parts of the human brain is determined by the genetic make-up of an individual's parents, and strongly correlates with that individual's cognitive ability, as measured by intelligence test scores. The twin researchers wrote: "We found that brain structure is under significant genetic control, in a broad anatomical region that includes frontal and language-related cortices. The quantity of frontal grey matter, in particular, was most similar in individuals who were genetically alike; intriguingly, these individual differences in brain structure were tightly linked with individual differences in IQ." Confirmation of this result came swiftly from a Dutch twin-study team (Nature Neuroscience, ii 2002) which found heritabilities around .85 for both IQ and brain volume and that the .40 correlation between them was wholly genetic. From California came a firm result that higher-IQ have more grey matter in brain areas activated during IQ testing (especially in the frontal lobes) (Haier, 2004). Far from being attributable to musical exposure and practice, pitch discrimination is 75% heritable (Nature, 7 ii 02, News & Views). A study of 1,189 twin pairs found MZs much more similar in ability and school achievement in ways that could not be explained by greater similarity of social environment ('Genetics 'play key  role in determining child's IQ'', Daily Telegraph, 18 iii 02, reporting Annual Conference of British Psychological Society). Britain's top psychiatrist, Sir Michael Rutter (Maudsley Hospital, London), largely avoided the temptation to say all development is 'a complex interaction effect of nature and nurture' when he wrote in Times Higher (29 iii 2002, p. 15): "The independent importance of genetic effects has the strongest factual basis. Evidence concerning both schizophrenia and autism, for example, indicates that the genetic risks for these disorders are not dependent on the children encountering environmental hazards." After years of asthma being blamed on 'dominant mothers' and obsessionally clean homes, a gene was found to account substantially for 40% of cases. Autism, too, should not be blamed on the environments provided by 'refrigerator' or otherwise socially unskilled mothers.
  3. Like many other allegedly* stressful or even 'traumatizing' events, non-violent paedophilia involving young teenagers [sometimes called ephebophilia] typically does no measurable harm (Bruce Rind et al., Psychological Bulletin June '98; McDougall NewsLetters Spring and Summer '99; T. D. Oellerich, 2000, Sexuality & Culture 4, 2, 67-81). Rind et al. concluded: "The results of our reviews clearly show that the assumptions of most mental health professionals, legislators, law enforcement personnel, media workers, and the lay public that sexual relations defined as Child Sex Abuse cause intense harm pervasively for both boys and girls are vastly exaggerated." (In Psychological Bulletin Dec. '01, Rind robustly defended his study against critics.) A 1989 review in the Journal of Sex Education and Therapy observed that, in non-clinical samples, pre-pubertal sex with an adult was looked back on with pleasure far more often than with pain. In 1995, a Canadian university professor defended intergenerational sex amidst a media firestorm. In 1998, actor Jeremy Irons denounced paedohysteria and admitted he had become rather 'obsessed' with teenage actress Dominique Swain when he played opposite her in the new film of 'Lolita'.
